1. "Nonviolent resistance" is a better characterization.

Nobody was “passive” in the usual sense of the word. And even nonviolent resistance was just one of many strands of action. There was not a homogeneous strain of passivity “of that time”. Mucho oversimplification. And a bit of condescension.
