Sen. Mike Moon (R of course) reiterates support for 12-year-old's right to marry in Missouri

During debate Tuesday on a bill banning gender-affirming care for transgender minors, Missouri State Senator Mike Moon suggested children as young as 12 should have the right to marry with parental permission.

"Do you know any kids who have been married at age 12? I do. And guess what? They're still married," Moon said in response to questioning by Democratic state Representative Peter Meredith. A clip of the interaction has garnered attention on social media.

A southwest Missouri Republican from Ash Grove, Moon's support of child marriage in some instances has been long documented. In 2018 Missouri passed a law raising the marriage age in the state from 15 to 16 and requiring parental permission for older teenagers to marry. Moon opposed the bill at the time — citing the same anecdote of a couple he met in college who had married one another at age 12.

He said they were still happily married and acknowledged that while they provided an extreme example, they were "something to ponder."

I have never seen any indication that Joseph was that old.

I am a little ashamed to admit how indoctrinated I was as a young person so I was intimately familiar with the bible.

A quick google search says anywhere from 15 to 35.

.

You can find peer-reviewed documents that support that, but I no longer have my university access.

It would skeeve a lot of people out to know that age disparity, and Joseph supposedly lived to 110.

This might shed some hints: https://www.catholic.com/magazine/online-edition/old-joseph-young-joseph

And you know, I read about a guy, cartoonist, died recently at age 102. He kept working until he was 99. Something to ponder while considering a raise in the retirement age for all workers, even those whose jobs are slightly more strenuous than cartooning.

Republican logic: Take the most extreme example you can find, then legislate as if it was typical.

5. I would imagine that the point he was hitting on was that if 12 was old enough to decide

that you're stuck in the body of the wrong gender, and begin taking treatments that will forever alter your development ... then you're also old enough to get married.

It's pretty damn stupid (esp. to say in public), but it's not the stupidest argument I've ever heard

And of course if the intention was that a 50 year old could marry a 12 year old, (vs 2x12 year olds) it gets especially resoundingly and disgustingly stupid.

It does appear he is dreaming about having a young virgin around 12 or 13. Things are different in todays world. Back in the olden days it was common for girls to marry young. My grandmother was 14 when she married my grandfather. She started having babies soon after and had 13 children. This was in early 1905. Not sure about the date but in that range. I think this guy might be leaning pervert. Needs to be watched.

"It's been 2 years already!"

a boy and a girl 12 years old got married. still together. i cannot imagine what kind of religious bubble they reside in. I can't even think of how they would have set up housekeeping or had jobs or anything at that age. that's just leapfrogging childhood. it's wrong and primitive and not compatible with civilization in the 21st century.

Rape a 12 year old, pay off the parents to allow the rapist to marry the child. Continue the rape for a few years, get a divorce, and no rape charges on record when they run for office.
