General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHave we heard from Laura Bush, a former librarian, about what the GOP is doing to libraries?
From the Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries webpage:
Once a child learns to use a library, the doors to learning are always open.
Mrs. Laura Bush
Studies show that the quality of a school library has a major impact on reading scores and academic success. A former librarian and teacher, Mrs. Laura Bush understands that limited financial resources often result in school leaders placing a lower priority on their libraries. The Laura Bush Foundation for Americas Libraries provides grants to low-income schools, allowing them to expand, update, and diversify their book and print collections.

I wonder if any current Republican would even care if she spoke out for libraries.

(13,128 posts)incessantly for being competent and smart, Laura was the docile opposite. Shes definitely not going to speak up. And truthfully if she did it would carry very little weight just as she did.

(381 posts)As I recall, during the Bush administration, the federal government disassembled much of the library system serving federal agencies. So if a scientist at EPA wanted to refer to a book on some subject, she could no longer pick it off the shelf of a library down the hall; she had to go on a safari to locate a copy somewhere. Did Laura speak up? Of course not. So expect her to remain silent when it really counts.
