(10,014 posts)They're passing one horrid law after another in red states and not looking back. They aren't screwed - women are.

(23,337 posts)None of this mess will be unraveled in my life time. Women are dying as a result and that will continue exponentially
.and not just women in their child bearing years either. Because doctors who specialize in womens healthcare are leaving red states, middle aged and older women will die when cancers and other curable diseases are not identified early enough to treat.
WOMEN ARE SCREWED.

(24,436 posts)Long term I'm not sure that this is a "win" for Republicans. Unfortunately, there will have to be ongoing exposure of how these laws are actually affecting women and/or some kind of catalyzing event(s) before some of these laws start to be walked back. Recent electoral results seem to suggest that the fall of Roe is having some pretty significant impacts, even in Red states.

(33,643 posts)Now, from my perspective, if the following conditions were true, I could maybe get behind it:
1) That this ALSO expressly meant that all abortions before 20 weeks are LEGAL, nationally, and
2) There's an exception for life of the mother or serious fetal abnormalities that's written very leniently and specifically says any licensed MD has the final, legal 'say' in all cases, and
3) That this would, once and for all, end this corrosive debate. Both sides would agree this is a fair compromise, and stop fighting over it.
However, probably none of these things would actually be the case if Tim Scott were to be the POTUS signing the bill.
Then again, #3 would probably never happen anyway, at least not completely.

(8,965 posts)And proceeded to paint themselves into a corner with it. Witness poor Tim Scott. It must suck to be him right now. His evasive and pathetic answer to a simple question underscores how screwed his party is, and abortion policy is only one of the reasons. He can try and sidestep the question by saying "We're having the wrong conversation", but it's not about conversation, it's about a punitive regressive policy toward women, owned lock, stock, and barrel by the Republican party. The party finds itself with "no way out" other than implementing one Draconian law after another in states with a legislative lock. The solution to this "dilemma" will be left to voters, and at this point, it is looking like Democrats' exceeding expectations in the 2022 mid-terms was only a warm up for a major course correction come 2024.

(3,315 posts)I mean, he might just have tried to pretend he's never sinned in the sheets, but allegedly this lifelong bachelor has claimed he's pure.
And he thinks he has the right to tell women what to do?
