General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI see two options for Clarence. Is there a third?
I see only one of two things happening.
1). He lives out the rest of his life in his lifetime SCOTUS appointment, enjoying yearly R.V. vacations in the WalMart parking lot
2). Democrats eventually have enough seats in Congress for the majority required to impeach him.
I don't acknowledge "Roberts doing something about him" as an option, because the saga just keeps getting worse, and Roberts is more silent than a mime trying to find his way around that invisible wall.
IS THERE a third possibility?

(22,440 posts)Crowe does not like all this attention to his bribery. Clarence will find himself standing alone, feeling ostracized, and finally resigning.

joe should offer him a nixon style pardon. i dont usually approve of such things, but at this point id like to see 1 branch of govt not mired in protracted legal bullshit.
question is who to send.

(24,328 posts)Thay's why I basically split it between that and what you said.
I think that, unchecked, he'll only become more arrogant.

(10,478 posts)The man somehow weathered the Anita Hill mess, something he congratulates himself for every day of his life. But sitting there at the hearings, one look at him would have told you he wasn't a quitter. And that would have been an unbearable embarrassment to most sane people. He's spent his entire career in the spotlight as the proverbial immovable object. He's not going to quit over some fancy financial footwork.

Not suggesting it is the likeliest scenario, as the mans seems shameless, but the glare of ongoing revelations and public attention could get to be too much.

(4,635 posts)saves this country from a VERY ugly confrontation between those who have ethics, and those who HATE ethics.
There has never (In my very uneducated estimation) been someone so devoid of ethics as Clarence Thomas and his wife.
If we are going to save this country and democracy, and he refuses to step down, and the rePuqs refuse to impeach, then the MASH theme song could save us.

(7,190 posts)indict sitting office holders. Otherwise, indict his ass. Put him on trial. Since he is a prominent personage, we should have him convicted and jailed by, oh, somewhere around 2040.
Frankly, though I don't like the process, indict his wife and make a deal that involves his resignation from the court.

(2,600 posts)Even republicans have to recognize how bad this looks. Start out easy with some internal admonishment and nudging by the other SC justices. When that doesnt make a dent, Crow and whoever else is bribing Clarence drop their support and make clear that its time to go. Next, up the ante with some stern warnings of investigations into Clarence and his wife. Follow up with some actual investigations. He may be so fed up with the scrutiny at that point that he reluctantly resigns to spend more time with his family.

(24,435 posts)SCOTUS was always something considered to be beyond reproach. There are few if any hecks and balances on their behavior because the founders didn't think they'd need them because only the best among us with the highest character would ascend to this position.
Thomas is ike Trump in a way, when you have zero checks and balances, you end up with total and complete corruption.
