I have these visual images of scheming mama, sitting in her rocking chair on the porch, thinking up more assignations for Clarence.

(3,868 posts)If that turns out to be true I don't see how Thomas survives this. Crow's explanation about a future museum don't pass the smell test. He even added a car port to the house for her.

(14,868 posts)As far as Im aware, the only way to remove him from the SC is Impeachment. I dont see a republican majority house passing impeachment. And even assuming they lose the house next election and the new house passes it to the senate, It would still take 2/3 of the senate. Even if Democrats shot the moon and won every single race, taking seats in places like Texas, Tennessee, Florida, and Wyoming, we still wouldn't have 2/3 of the senate.

BTW did you see Biden is going to Co. Mayo tomorrow?
To Ballina which is a half hour away from where my grandparents were born and raised.
I am so excited to see the pictures.
It is the isolated western coast of Ireland.
mopinko
(73,726 posts)both his great grandfather and obamas great grandfather both left from the same port, in co louth, 5 mos apart.
sad to see some on twitter w the- he isnt irish, he was born in america. i mean, yeah, i know thats out there. but its not like it was our idea to leave.
heard him say a couple times-hes never met an irish-american who didnt yearn to see ireland.
the only downside of seeing him over there is how it strikes my desire to go home.
Irish_Dem
(81,266 posts)Wow that is wild about Joe and Obama's ancestors.
I didn't know that.
I know, being Irish is such a strong pull, it is hard to describe.
And being Irish American is unique.
Yes seeing the pictures will be bittersweet.

(73,726 posts)but between the beauty of the country, and the stories that came out of it, i think its just a bit more universal for the irish.
i think the hunger that sent so many away is maybe unusual in that it was so many in such a short time.
ive had an irish carpenter working for me that last 2 wks. its been fun talking to him. from co clare. a sweetie.

One of my cousins made a visit to Ireland and visited our grandmother's
childhood home which has now been converted to a small barn for animals.
I do quite a bit of ancestry research and the Irish records are a disgrace thanks to the British.
The records had to be recorded in secret by the priests, to keep them hidden
from the British. So they are a mess.
So a national identity and personalty was forged because of all of this.
After 1000 years, it is now part of our DNA.
Fiercely proud and independent. We don't take shit off of anyone.
And give as good as we get. Like John Kennedy said, don't get mad, get even.
But of course at the same time we are highly sentimental, poetic, and magical.
I love the combination.
This is especially true of the part of Ireland where my family is from.
The isolated western coast of Ireland.
An impoverished, but proud, cantankerous, rebellious people. The story is that
even the British tax collectors refused to go to this part of Ireland. The people
had no money and didn't put up with crap.
Some of Biden's family are from this area as well.
This is how I could predict what Biden would do in regards to Ukraine.
Pictures of the Russian bombing of a Ukrainian maternity hospital appeared
with a very pregnant woman being carried on a stretcher, she and the baby later died.
And stories of women and children being raped, tortured and killed.
You and I both know exactly what Joe Biden said in private when he saw these pictures and heard
the stories. The cussing and anger must have been epic.
I was also 100% certain that while Biden would be professional in public, he was going to load
a heap of hurt on Putin in private. And recently we saw that was true, as we learn that Biden
sent in US military special ops from the get go.

(73,726 posts)i will die sad that i didnt get to spend the time w the old ones my older sibs did. but i rly never heard stories of home. my da told me many stories of his life, but thats it. not even much about the rest of his family.
finally learning my history was a revelation. esp as im the black sheep of the family in large part cuz im the fighter. i think that coin has another side, tho. all those year taught a lot of ppl to keep their heads down and their mouths shut.
the guy i had working for me said the hardest part of living here is that he just isnt used to the way ppl speak their minds. i told him the problem i have w my family is that they love to talk about me, but they rarely talk to me. he said that was very irish.
hes from clare. im starting to learn the geography. did 1 of those blank map things the other day. failed miserably but i did get a few right. and i was close on a lot of my misses.
my ppl are from tipparary, offaly and cork. i have a friend over there in donegal.
i need to get off my butt and get over there.

I can make a post with only three sentences and get 356 likes on it.
And I get all these reddit awards and top 1% monthly karma.
It is truly crazy. My daughter is just amazed. She is used to her mother blithering away
on any topic, but didn't think other people would love it so much.
I attribute all of this to my Irish DNA, but my brother and cousins are the real story tellers.
I am just a runner up.
I actually don't really like it. I like being anonymous and not getting attention.
On DU, I get some support but mostly ignored or get the crap beaten out of me.
Which I love actually. It is more comfortable for me.
DU is so intelligent, sophisticated, argumentative that it is a comfort zone.
Oh yes that is very Irish, grudges, arguing, not communicating, etc.
The joke at my family reunions is that if the cops aren't called it isn't a good reunion.
Which is really funny since a big chunk of the reunion consists of big city cops.
The boy cousins tease the girl cousins, and the girl cousins won't put up with it and fight back.
Then the boy cousins get mad, and the girl cousins threatened to tell their mother about it.
It is so much fun, really.
In my part of Ireland the people must speak their minds ad nauseum
because that is how my family operates.
My family is from Co Mayo. Yes I wish I had talked to my grandparents more about their lives.
I know, I keep thinking I better make a trip to Ireland.
I was planning on doing so before Covid struck.
And then I had a bad fall and fractured a bunch of bones and was going nowhere.

(4,557 posts)Was Thomas ever going to make anything but a radical right wing vote in any case before the court? Hes one of the most consistent justices in history, consistently wrong but consistent none the less.
I know many here like to envision a corrupt right wing judge taking bribes but lets be honest; there is no need to bribe a Justice, you just install one you know is going to vote your way no matter what which is exactly why Thomas and the other 5 were all chosen.
Im not defending Thomas here. He has apparently broken disclosure laws, but there is nothing to seriously suggest there is anything past that.

Tom Rinaldo
(23,187 posts)The percentage of Crow's wealth that he has invested into his "friendship" with Thomas is microscopic. Crow doesn't have to ask for anything specific in return. Thomas in return for all that "kindness" from Crow just has to keep Crow's often obvious interests in mind while he is deciding on cases. He can even make some rulings not to Crow's liking, as long as he maintains a general inclination to help Crow out when possible. Over the year's Crow more than gets his money's worth out of having a Justice favorably disposed toward his interests on the Supreme Court.
Hermit-The-Prog
(36,631 posts)Thomas is bought. He has blatantly sold his seat; it doesn't matter if there was a price tag on individual decisions.

This house and the adjacent lots cost a pittance - half a year's salary. He could easily have fixed up his mom's house. There's a zillion contractors in Savannah who'd be happy to do the work.
Crow probably does plan to make it a museum (and use the vacant lots for parking or a new building), but who would bother visiting?
Maybe if Thomas' grave is there and they have to pee...
