The rumors around Bob Lee's killing were apparently wrong. The damage is already done

Immediate reactions to last week’s killing of Cash App founder Bob Lee were depressingly predictable: people trying to weave a high-profile crime in San Francisco into the growing online opus of the city’s downfall.

As usual, social media fearmongers like Elon Musk claimed it was more evidence that the city is devolving into chaos, and some media outlets like Fox News fanned the flames with click-baity, ratings-driven sensationalized coverage.

Turns out, police believe Lee was killed in the early hours of April 4, by Nima Momeni, a 38-year-old tech entrepreneur, who was his acquaintance.

At a press conference on Thursday, police officials made it clear that Lee’s death had nothing to do with homelessness in the city, which was baseless conjecture peddled by some people online, including entrepreneur David Sacks.

“This is more about human nature and human behavior than it is our city,” San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott said. “They knew each other.”

He literally has a 100% failure rate on nearly 20 prophecies (because he's not smart enough to figure out how the prophecy con works), and he said it was an assassination by the Deep State to help bring about financial collapse, etc.

The narrative instantly shifted from a racist theme of woke libs letting homeless zombies rampage to ‘soon to be a Netflix true crime series’. Damage done. Mission accomplished.

but the arrogant, narcissistic, right wing asshole will never do that, continue to spew his hate and garbage

I will never buy or use anything that he is associated with.

I wish he would move his companies to Texas, and see how many there will buy his overpriced cars there. Better yet, he should go back to South Africa, where his apartheid mentors no longer are in control.

People assumed wrong. And hey, I was one of them. My bad.

Why? Because it's a very easy thing to believe for people who live and work around the city. The place is a total mess.

But people are actually attempting, "You got this one wrong, guys. The city's fine!"

The city is anything but fine. And I resent people who don't live here - and even the ones who do - turning it into some Left vs. Right proxy war. "Oh oh, conservatives hate SF, so I'm going to pretend it's fine. We can't let them win!" Yeah, I love walking through Civic Center, hearing crunch under my shoes, looking down, "Oh, it's ok, everyone. It's just used needles! I thought it was something serious for a sec." Or standing in Little Saigon wondering if those people rolling across the sidewalk pumped full of heroin are going to actually roll into traffic. Or leave somewhere downtown at night and wonder if you're going to make it to the BART station without getting accosted.

It's not fun if you live there. Now the city is telling people it wants another $600 million to fight homelessness. The pretty universal reaction? "Where the fuck is all the money you're already spending? Because it isn't showing up on the streets." Which politician's cousin's pockets are about to get even more lined with public cash while conditions remain unchanged or even worse?

While everyone has their Right vs. Left slapfights, the place is devolving.

But hey, if you don't live there, everything's fine! Or if you are in the city but squirreled away in the Outer Richmond or up on Twin Peaks, pretend the rest of the city looks like that.

Things are not going well here. And if the real thing that makes you mad is that conservatives on the internets are saying things! instead of the human degradation that our systems are continuing to allow to go unaddressed and worsen, maybe some priority examining is in order.

I have a friend who lived there until last year. I kept meaning to visit, and he told me no, that I'd be disappointed even if we visited the places he took my mom years ago.

The city is awful. My sister lived there for years in the 1980s, and she loved it. When she last visited, she was so upset at the decline.

Amazing, though not surprising, to see folks here trying to pretend all is well there.

She came a little while back and wanted to do a whole tour because it'd been over twenty or so years since she was last out here. And we did to an extent. The Bridge, wine country, Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf (tourist trap that it is), Japantown, Golden Gate and Dolores Parks, etc. One morning we went over to Washington Square, because she wanted to see the historic church there and we were going to get foccacia from Liguria Bakery - you have to go crazy early in the morning to get it, because it sells out fast.

Well, we were a little too early, before sanitation had a chance to get to anything.

That was a thing. She was horrified. She kept asking what happened.

Right now, partner and I want to go see Book of Mormon at the Orpheum as a dual birthday treat (we're both May types). And our discussion is centered around, "Maybe we should go to the 1pm Wednesday show," because we don't want to leave the theater at night and deal with the horror show that is Market Street after dark. Normally we take BART in from East Bay so as not to deal with parking and things (things = have our car broken into).

Do we want to do that at 11pm?

Newp! But the city's fine, y'all.

A few years ago, I decided to do a bucket list trip taking a trip from the east coast to the west via train. Seattle is the city I chose because I always wanted to see it.

Loved the train trip and heartily recommend it to anyone not fussy about time lol.

But wow, I was so disappointed in Seattle. I'm a big walker and that's my preferred method of transportation, other than a bike for longer distances.

But as a small woman walking in a strange town, I was quickly put on guard with the number of tents and (apparently) crazy people everywhere. Now, I lived in Key West for 25 years, so crazy is not a word I throw around lightly. But someone screaming at the top of their lungs, holding their genitals, dancing, and kicking things is someone I will avoid.

This became a big deal because no matter where I was, it seemed I could take a turn and there would be another encampment. I began riding a bike just so I could get by these places faster, but it wasn't fun.

I've traveled in many European capitals in my life, but this was my first time in a large American western city.

I won't visit again.

in Austin. While we are a beautiful progressive city, our homeless population has grown exponentially. We've voted in more money over and over again and yet the issue still persists.

It's not safe here for anyone, including the homeless whom are victims of major crimes consistently. And tent cities are the norm.

Other than to point out DU has a habit of jumping to conclusions? We all know DU does that.

But the facts of that homicide do not change the facts of the city's decline either.

Two men known to one another may have an altercation for no particular reason, but there will be some tale behind that altercation ending in a stabbing death.
