Ralph Yarl making stunning recovery, family lawyer says

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ralph Yarl was shot at point-blank range in the head by a white homeowner but miraculously survived the bullet to his skull, the attorney for the family of the Black teenager said.

As Yarl, 16, recovers at home, the 84-year-old owner of the Kansas City, Missouri, home where Yarl mistakenly went to pick up his brothers faces his first court appearance Wednesday. Andrew Lester is charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. He could face life in prison if convicted. Lester does not yet have an attorney listed, according to Missouri's online court reporting system.

“Do you all understand that this 16-year-old boy was shot at point blank range in the face?" Merritt asked the crowd of about 150 supporters Tuesday at a downtown rally. "A bullet traveled from (Lester's) gun less than 5 feet into his upper temple, penetrated his skull, and they scraped bullet fragments off his frontal lobe on Thursday. On Saturday, he was home playing with his dog.”

One sign at the rally read, “He is only 16.” Another: “Is this what Kansas City has come to? Stop gun violence.”

And, of course, any bullet to the head can kill.... BUT a small caliber pistol bullet, like the .32 he was shot with, has a tough time penetrating the thicker parts of the skull.... the forhead for example. Sounds like the bullet did penetrate, but not far ebnough to penetrate the brain. Thank goodness. One reason the FBI switched away from the 9mm was because of a fairly well know gunfight where the 9mm failed to bring down the bad guys, despite hits to the head.

Ralph should thank his lucky stars that Lester used a realtively weak round and it didn't hit a soft/squishy bit. May Lester go to jail for whatever is left of his miserable life.

exit the skull so it would just bounce around and turn the brain to mush. Much like a blender would..

An EMT told me that years ago, I don't know if it is still true or not.

I'm sure she will recognize the symptoms immediately and get him back to the hospital if need be.
