With the Legislature set to adjourn for the year, Gov. Bill Lee is making a last-minute pitch for a temporary order of protection designed to avert mass shootings such as the one that killed six people at The Covenant School.
Lee issued a public statement Wednesday asking the Legislature to pass a bill guaranteeing due process and improving access to mental health support while allowing police to confiscate weapons from dangerous, unstable people for up to 180 days.
That should be done in a way that requires due process and a high burden of proof, supports law enforcement and punishes false reporting, enhances mental health support, and preserves the Second Amendment for law-abiding citizens, Lee said in a video statement.
The bill, whose sponsor is unknown, would create a petition for a temporary mental health order of protection claiming the person poses a substantial likelihood of serious harm by having a firearm or any ammunition in the persons possession.

(790 posts)will never enact such a measure.
Hilarious too is the "unknown sponsor".
Lee has not had a sudden change of heart to protect Tennesseans after the mass shooting at the Covenant School. He felt the fire from the protests and the national attention to the Tennessee Three, but that coward-ass grey nonentity of man will never cross his party. This bill of unknown sponsorship is as dead as Bill Lee's insides.

(66,434 posts)I'm positive he used the term 'confiscate' deliberately. He knows no Republican in the country is ever going to vote to pass a bill about gun safety that includes the word 'confiscate'.
The legislature will vote it down, and the Governor will throw up his hands and say: "Welp. I tried..."
