Good New Republic Fundraising email:

Dear Reader,

$787.5 million.

That’s how much Fox News is paying for the privilege of continuing to lie to you.

By agreeing to fork over that amount to a private company, Dominion Voting Systems, Fox doesn’t have to apologize for misleading its viewers so thoroughly that it damaged our country’s voting infrastructure, leading some U.S. counties to abandon voting machines altogether. It doesn’t have to admit that its lies helped divide our country further than ever before, in the wake of a clean and decisive presidential election, poisoning our democracy and helping to fuel an insurrection.

In fact, the same “news anchors” who lied to the American public night after night after night have now been spared from being hauled to the witness stand and admitting what they did under oath. Rupert Murdoch paid $787.5 million to save them from a national walk of shame.

“Money is accountability,” Dominion Voting Systems said, “and we got that today from Fox.” Dominion is a business, after all, so it’s understandable that they’ve mistaken accounting for accountability. In fact, $787.5 million represents about a 1,500 percent return on investment for Staple Street Capital, the private equity firm that bought Dominion in 2018. And while $787.5 million is a staggering sum for most mortals, Rupert Murdoch has an estimated $4 billion in cash on hand at Fox, so the network has already returned to business as usual.

“This settlement reflects Fox’s continued commitment to the highest journalistic standards,” the network said in a statement. “We are hopeful that our decision to resolve this dispute with Dominion amicably, instead of the acrimony of a divisive trial, allows the country to move on from these issues.”

What Fox really hopes is that you’ll forget this ever happened. And naturally, Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, and Laura Ingraham are all back on the air, spewing new lies and doing further damage to our democracy.

In fact, fierce and independent media like The New Republic—you know, the kind who actually DO have the highest journalistic standards—are struggling with a financial landscape that is more difficult to navigate than ever before, largely because we are loyal to telling the truth rather than telling an audience whatever they want to hear.

While Fox enjoys rich cable carriage fees and ads from cartoonish pillow moguls, we spend money on award-winning writers and reporters, demanding editors, and an old-fashioned journalism department called fact-checkers.

Which means we need your help.

Don’t sit on the sidelines when the fight for truth and justice is being fought all around you.

Please join us in the fight against Fox and its empire of lies.
