(86 posts)Is there is someone who will disagree with just about anything you say. I am from the south. We often call female people girls. My girlfriend is in her late fifties and I call her pretty girl all the time. My niece is 27 and she is a pretty girl. its how I talk.

(86 posts)that gives the right ammunition in their "WOKE" movement. Everything does not have to be offensive. Pretty girl is a compliment nothing more. I thought she was pretty and I liked what she had to say. Thought I would share it. Sue me.

(22,446 posts)The custom of calling women girls is NOT considered appropriate by most non Southerners. Many find it highly offensive, and lecturing people about why they (in your opinion) do not have the right to have a different view from you is NOT a good look.

Yeah, we women have heard this stuff for decades. It's what men say to silence us because they want to continue to spout off in a way that puts women (oh, excuse me, "girls" ) in their places in society. As "the lessers" who are the equivalent of children.
Even when they're told that it's not appreciated, they double down and shift the blame and criticism to women, as you have done. Because they'd rather continue to act like a-holes.
Enjoy your stay at DU.

(54,031 posts)especially black).
In old movies I have seen 60, 70 year black women called girls, especially if they are the servants of some wealthy white family.
That shit makes me burn with anger.
Sky Jewels
(9,148 posts)It's sooo ridiculous that this is still a "thing," as they say.
And this is on a supposedly progressive board. And then some men are chiming in to give "attaboys!" to the poster.
I wonder if they would do it if the poster had called a grown man a "boy", especially a black man? I seriously doubt it. But they think it's fine to condescend to women and then basically tell us to stop being hysterical.
PatSeg
(52,873 posts)and to some people it is not necessarily sexist. I am old enough that to me a twenty-something person is still a "kid".
I don't agree with everyone's use of language all the time, but I also don't feel compelled to correct them. We are here to have discussions with our peers. It is not our place to tell them what words they should or shouldn't use, though occasionally we can indicate our preference if it seems necessary (I find it rarely is however). Nitpicking other people's choice of words instead of listening to what they are saying often shuts down meaningful interaction.
After many, many decades on this planet, I've learned whenever possible to listen to what a person means. Meanwhile, language is always changing and with the Internet, the changes are coming more quickly than ever. We cannot expect everyone to live up to our own personal standards or be aware of the latest taboos.
We are engaging online with nameless, faceless people that we know little or nothing about. I try to keep that in mind when I respond to someone, as we really don't know how our words affect people we cannot see or hear. I am here to "connect", not "correct".

(22,446 posts)Down South, men are called boys and women are called girls all the time. Good old boys and good old girls. It's not just women, it's the same for both.
Having said that, I think it behooves Southerners to be aware that calling a woman a girl is going to land differently and can be offensive when talking to people not from the south.

It is Not "sexist" in my Opinion and I've lived all over the USA.

(22,446 posts)I'm familiar with the southern custom of calling people boys and girls rather than men and women, but not everyone is.
I think Southerners like you need to be aware that calling a woman a girl is going to land a lot differently and can be very offensive to people not from the south. You need to realize that some people ARE going to take exception to it and respect that when you are talking to people from anywhere other than the south.

(4,684 posts)Her message was clear, does it hold more weight because she's 'pretty?' I'm sorry, but I see it as objectification.

BTW, not to be nit picky, but the subtitles said "train" the swamp. I really don't feel like going back to listen to the video to see if that matches what she said.

(4,684 posts)Your post is just as opinionated as you claim mine is.
Actually, it's your opinion that I should keep my opinion to myself, others may disagree.
Just because you don't like what I said doesn't give you authority over whether I have the right to say it.
Sheesh!

(15,556 posts)women have been treated as second class citizens for years. One of the ways were were dismissed and not listened to is by calling us "pretty" and "girls". It gets under your skin. Mine at least.
I was one of the first 100 women lawyers in the history of my state. Practicing law in a court room where many men thought they were doing us a favor by calling us "pretty" or "girls" or by our first names (when men were always referred to as "Mr. So and So" ) put us at yet another disadvantage. I remember another lawyer literally patting me on the head and saying "don't worry your pretty little head about that" and hundreds of similar of incidents.
It might sound fine to you downsouth but to many of us it does not. So, if you want to say it here, you will be thought of us as an asshole especially when you compare another poster's opinion to one.

(15,556 posts)humiliating.
On a slightly different issue, I finally took one of the judge's aside and told him it wasn't cool to call me by my first name in open court. He had a different reaction to the op in this thread. He was initially shocked then quickly "got it". He said "how stupid of me please forgive me, you are right of course." He was a great guy. A few years later a particularly obnoxious lawyer was "beating me up" before a hearing before that same judge. The lawyer said "I'm well known in the courts, the judge will of course rule in my favor, you are a nothing you will lose."
I had literal nightmares the night before the hearing which was held in the judges chambers, not open court. When we were taken back to chambers the judge looked at me and said "Susan! It has been so long since I've seen you. Welcome, I've missed you. Can I take your coat. Would you like some coffee? Please, have a seat and let me know what you've been up to." Then he looked at the obnoxious (need I say male) lawyer and said, "And what's your name?"
It was all I could do to not laugh.
We make progress one person at a time. Just not with everyone.

(4,684 posts)It has nothing to to do with pronouns or "wokeness."
It also has nothing to do with pronouns as "girl" and "woman" are nouns and "pretty" is an adjective.
