Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIs a Trump/Desantis ticket possible? I see a nightmare scenario that elects them.
Selling the ticket on the very fact they reconciled. But under what conditions would Desantis accept to taking the VEEP spot?
Perhaps a Dick Cheney style of Vice Presidency. It could even be an open secret that Desantis will be wielding such power in a Trump Presidency. As long as Trump has the Title, and Desantis does all the work, both, I think, would be just fine with the whole thing.
I'm sorry, but I see this ticket as a possibility. Trump and Desantis have two years to figure this out. There's a very good chance that DJT will be their candidate, and his chances improve every time another Repub enters the race. And there's little Desantis can do to stop that. But accepting a Dick Cheney style Vice Presidency gives him the top spot by default come 2028.
The timing could help them, too, creating an inertia that puts them over the top by 2024. I haven't seen any polls regarding a full ticket match-up, but I have all ready seen "Trump-Desantis-2024" flags in my home town and on FaceBook posts. I do think this is the only ticket that would have a chance to win in 2024. But I do see the possibility.
Scary thought.

(130,439 posts)He wouldn't want a Cheney-type vice president because he always wants to be in charge of everything, and he certainly wouldn't allow the VP to have any power at all, real or even perceived.

(782 posts)He'd still rather someone else does all the boring work stuff. I think he'd be quite content. As long as he heard "sir" and "Mr, President" all the time.
That's why Sarah Palin disappeared during Trump's presidency. At the beginning, she made a big deal out of visiting the White House and was a big supporter who was all set to be a gadfly for four years. Then, she vanished. It's my hypothesis that either:
1) Trump thought she was stealing too much of his spotlight, so he ghosted her, or
2) Trump hit on her in some way, and even she couldn't stand the thought of putting up with that.
Trump will never select a flame-thrower like Kari Lake or MTG for VP. Those two would hog too much of the spotlight and he can't stand that. I can't see him going along with DeSantis either, since DeSantis has his own loyal army.
Only one narcissist at a time can inhabit Trumpworld. He needs another boring fly-rest like Pence.

(44,493 posts)...then no.
Well, they could, but then they'd be giving up any right to Florida's 29 electoral votes, and that would be suicide.
Constitution says so.
That being said, even if they had diverse state residencies, I can't see them ever getting along. Trump's a malignant narcissist, and DeSantis is a retributive sadist, so they'd eventually turn on each other with their pathologies.

(3,213 posts)Electors cannot vote for a Presidential and Vice Presidential candidate who both hail from an electors home state.
Meaning while they both can run from the same state, Florida electors cannot give them their votes, meaning Republicans would lose Florida's 29 Electoral votes if DeSantis and Trump are on the same ticket.

(96,882 posts)Trump hates Desantis for having the temerity to run against him. He won't pick anyone for VP who isn't a loyal toady who won't outshine him.
Add to which, the 12th Amendment specifies:
The Republicans would never risk electing a Democratic VP in a close election.

(782 posts)prohibits an elector from casting both of his or her votes for candidates from the same state in which the elector lives? And wasn't this because, at the time, the Veep was the guy who came in 2nd, not as a previously chosen VP candidate?
Midwestern Democrat
(1,029 posts)and Desantis in 2024. Basically, if Trump won the election by less than 30 electoral votes, all of the Republican electors would have to agree in advance to be "Faithless Electors" and cast their votes for Vice President for the same non-Floridian replacement candidate selected by the party after the election. Obviously, it would be ridiculous to select a VP nominee where that kind of complicated shenanigan would have to happen if the ticket won by less than 30 electoral votes.

(4,741 posts)Their egos won't let either play second fiddle to anyone or to be the supposed puppetmaster behind the scenes. They both need to be in charge and getting all the credit for the evil they do.
The primary will be brutal. I predict both of them will say that the elections were rigged, the convention is rigged--everything's rigged. Even the winner will claim it, because each thinks they deserve to get 100% of the vote.
Grab your popcorn. You know it's coming.
