(23,236 posts)There was an article awhile back about a small group of GOP insiders working to change the primary rules away from the current winner-take-all rules. I havent heard anything more about, probably because the MAGAloons are in control of the party.
However, if more indictments roll out before the GOP debates start in August, we might see a renewed push to change the rules.

(39,086 posts)and the resulting recession Trump would have probably won in 2020. Biden's approval ratings have never gone much higher than 40%. If the
Republicans succeed in crashing the economy with higher fuel prices and default on the debt Trump could certainly be elected. All the Republicans
have to do is suppress or switch the votes in a couple states. It's always the economy and for some unknown reason Americans always think the
Republicans are better at handling the economy. I remember 2016 and the invincible Blue Wall. I am not saying we can't win but it may not be the cake walk we think.

(9,148 posts)since 2020, Trump staged a coup and his Supreme Ct. stripped women of bodily autonomy. Many millions of Gen Zers have aged into voting, and many Trumpy older voters have died (some from Covid). He doesn't have the advantage of running as a sitting president. So there are many factors working against him, too.

Beautiful Disaster
(667 posts)This whole post was about the general public.
But if you want to be real, the same poll in the OP shows that 52% of Democrats don't want Biden to run again:
https://apnorc.org/projects/most-democrats-would-support-biden-if-he-wins-the-nomination/
73% of all Americans don't want him to run again.
86% of independents don't want him to run again.
Really, Biden's numbers are worse than Trump's overall.
Only 14% of independents want Biden to seek reelection. 37% want Trump to seek the presidency in 2024.
So, really, more people want Trump to run than Biden to run. So, we better hope those who don't want Biden to run are still willing to vote for him.
ShazzieB
(22,590 posts)I assumed in error that you meant Democrats because...I don't really know why! It was an unconscious jump that my mind made for some odd reason, sorry.
Thanks for the link. Those numbers are definitely not encouraging, but I need to take some time and mull over what all of this data means. (For example, just off the top of my head, if 37% of independents want Trump to run, would any of those people vote for any Democrat?)
I am honestly not personally convinced at this point that it's a terrible idea for Biden to run again. This is one poll, it's very early days, and all that. But it is helpful to know what your comment was based on.
Beautiful Disaster
(667 posts)I do think people have doubts about his age but once he's the alternative, he'll be fine. I also think his being an incumbent is far more valuable than running a younger, inexperienced candidate who cedes incumbency.
ShazzieB
(22,590 posts)When you're making a choice, knowing what options you have to choose from can make a big difference.
I love Biden myself. I think he's been doing a great job, and I believe his experience (as incumbent, and also as V.P. and all those years in the Senate) is a tremendous strength. The depth of his understanding of how things work in Washington is a very BFD, IMO.

(6,619 posts)I would love another 4 years of a normal democracy, at least in one of our branches of govt - preferably 3.

Beautiful Disaster
(667 posts)So, even then, it seems unlikely it was, as you said, 'a lot of Democratic votes'.
Every election is a trade off.
Trump might have won 10% of Obama voters - but how many Romney voters shifted to Hillary? In 2016, she won 8% of Republican votes. That was a two-point increase over Obama's 6% in 2012.
So, the change was marginal and certainly not something I'm worried about.
My worry is turnout - getting turnout in the urban and suburban areas. That's what lost PA, MI and WI for Hillary and won it for Biden.

This is not complicated, is it? No, this is not complicated at all. Long term professionals in the Republican Party know that
Trump will lose, and he will lose by a very large margin. (like a landslide!)
Those elected and non-elected Republican professionals know the outcome of Donald Trump running again.

It should not even be a question of whether he's running again but they kept injecting that into the discussion as if it's a fair thing to even be discussing.
