MN: House on verge of passing bill legalizing recreational marijuana
The Minnesota House on Monday was on the verge of passing a bill legalizing recreational marijuana for people 21 and older.
The bill, HF100, comes after polling shows the majority of Minnesota voters support legalizing recreational marijuana and want the state to become the 22nd to allow recreational marijuana use.
The bill must still pass the Senate. DFL Gov. Tim Walz is expected to sign a legalization bill.
Although a few hurdles remain, Minnesota legalization advocates have made rapid gains in just the past year first winning a stealthy approval of low-dose THC drinks and edibles last year and then winning a legalization majority during the midterm elections.
Under the House bill, adults would be able to purchase and possess up to two ounces of cannabis flower from a licensed retailer and grow up to eight cannabis plants in their homes, only half of which can be mature plants. The bill restricts the amount of cannabis flower someone can have in their residence to 1.5 pounds, which can create approximately 672 joints. In addition, people convicted of marijuana-related petty misdemeanors would have their records expunged.
