I switched over to FOX yesterday evening...

I was curious as to how they were reporting on the breaking Mike Pence story.

No need to worry. They were not reporting it at all.

They were in a half-panic mode reporting on the new gun laws in Washington state. They were interviewing a gun shop owner who was pointing out the number of AR-15's left on his display wall and how the people were buying them.

But Mike Pence behind closed doors, giving testimony to the Special Counsel? It was not the lead story for FOX.

With about 400 million guns in this country, more guns than people, they seem to believe that what this country needs is more guns.

It is inevitable that guns plus political division will eventually lead to violence. Is that the direction we are headed?

Whatever problems our nation may have now or in the future, guns are not the solution.

Instead they may be the end of our democracy.

That's what the GQP is counting on. And if that does happen, the GQP will change the constitution and re-conform it to the GQP's image, the the 2nd amendment will only pertain to loyal upper class and their private securities.

to rename it the First Amendment. The original First Amendment would be lucky to stay in the top

Those windows are closing. We are in danger of entering a period most like The Thirty Years' War where tens of millions were killed and just as many fled Europe. For some reason we don't seem to realize that time period. At the time our early settlers were just off the Mayflower, and France and Spain were exploring north America, this war was raging in Europe. Most of our German settlers came to north America at that time as they escaped a war mostly fought on central European German soil.

We need to save our rule of law, shutdown enemy combatant media, cleanse our judiciary, and remove money from politics. Our only tool is to ensure Democrats keep winning elections. And 2024 looks bleak to me in the Senate and the House. Many states have been taken over by fascist legislatures. Red state - blue state will endure for a long time, probably well into the 2050s.

Scant few Germans immigrated to the US during the Thirty Years War, or even in the immediate aftermath of it. In fact, German immigration didn't begin in earnest until the 1680s, more than 30 years after the Thirty Years War ended in 1648.

The reasons for the pre-1680s low immigration numbers aren't a surprise: Traveling during wartime is of course a great danger for nearly everyone, which cuts down on getting to port cities. During the rebuilding efforts after the war, survivors of the conflict could expect to make good wages (high war death toll = massive labor shortage), and that had many stay put rather than leaving.

When Germans left their homeland in the 1680s, it usually wasn't over the war or even its fallout, but for the same reason British people left their homeland: To achieve greater economic opportunity or for religious freedom. Maybe even both. Depending on where you lived in Germany, the religion issue could prove quite problematic. A Protestant living in Bavaria would not have the same opportunities or freedoms as a Catholic, while a Catholic living in Mecklenburg would face the same--and that was true even before the war. Even if someone lived in a place agreeing with their beliefs, continued military conflicts over religion and land ownership probably did play a part in people wanting to get away from the insanity. See: Cow War (seriously).

So while the Thirty Years War had a decided impact on the region itself--no denying that, it didn't have much to do with German immigration to the US.

The Palatine Germans

Fort Stanwix National Monument

The Germans that would eventually settle the Mohawk Valley came from the Rhine Valley River region known as the "Palatinate." The name arose from the Roman word "Palatine," the title given to the ruling family of the area when it was part of the Holy Roman Empire. With the outbreak of the Thirty Years War in 1618, came 96 years of sporadic fighting and wars that would leave the Palatinate destroyed. This forced thousands of Germans to flee their homeland, and helped lead to the creation of the United States.

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I've thought this was Putin's plan all along--his best hope to destroy our democracy: arm US citizens to the teeth, spread fear and polarizing propaganda and let the shit hit the fan. It's the reason Russia had so much support for the NRA. Couldn't defeat us militarily, but propaganda has always been a Russian strength. Add it to our greatest weaknesses and our fragmented democracy is toast.

was predicted by a movie from the 80's called The Running Man. There are a lot of parallels as to where we are going in our society and fox news was perfectly represented by the television network in that movie, with the Killian character being interchanged with carlson, or o'reilly or hannity, etc. I think I'll go watch the video.

Not to be confused with the more recent tv series.

That is my gripe with Fox. Most times, they pick a topic, be it the border or inflation or Biden's age or his spending agenda or the Afghan withdrawal or Hunter's computer or the economy or weaponization of the justice department and run with it, distorting or exaggerating the facts but never offering the entire set of facts surrounding a particular talking point.

Take inflation for instance. They will say something like "Under the Biden administration, inflation has soared to a 40 year high." The statement is true in the sense that inflation has increased since Biden took office. But what they don't say is why inflation is high.

I don't watch or listen to 'conservative' media much, just enough to know they tell their audiences only what they want them to hear. It is a massive gaslighting industry.
