Members of the public watching the coronation on television, online and in parks and pubs will be invited to swear aloud their allegiance to the monarch in a chorus of millions of voices to be known as the Homage of the People.
People around the UK and abroad will be invited to say the words I swear that I will pay true allegiance to your majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God, in a declaration that replaces the traditional homage of peers.

(115,869 posts)Nobody is being required to do it; many will and many won't. I don't get why Americans have hissy fits over the British monarchy, a thousand-year-old inbred family with absolutely no actual power, which serves as nothing more than a symbol of national continuity, and which many Brits cherish as that symbol - just as Americans cherish symbols like the flag or the Statue of Liberty. If they want to swear their oath of allegiance to their figurehead monarchy, why not? We pledge allegiance to a flag.

(53,896 posts)coronation some 70 years ago. She was young and beautiful and had done her duty during the war so her coronation was positlvely accepted, but Charles is old and had the tawdry affair with Camilla while married to Diana...it's all just out of touch, so out of the past when these allegiance pledges were acceptable

(115,869 posts)If people in Britain want to pledge allegiance to their monarchy, they have the option of doing so; therefore it's "acceptable" to those who choose to do it. We have the option of pledging allegiance to a flag; how is that any different? Both the figurehead monarchy and the flag are national symbols, nothing more.

(51,308 posts)Are you being serious here? Do you know he is younger than our actual political leader? Elizabeth was older.
Charles is a figurehead. Please leave the ageist comments at the door.

Charles is 6 years younger!
Please do enlighten us.

(51,308 posts)This is how the line of succession works.
So just throw Charles out because he is "old" now?
If he was good looking and all, well, hell, that'd be different. Good lord.

(53,896 posts)I said he would endear himself to the Brits for forever if he would just have the Archbishop of Canterbury perform the coronation in a private ceremony with a pool photographer and no live TV, and thus save the country all the expense.
Of course that won't happen but I'd bet his popularity would soar.

I've learned long since that we have many here who think there is only ONE way to live, which seems a wee bit authoritarian.
The Brits can do what they want. They can join in, they can protest, they can dance, celebrate, and drink (which most of my family will do) or they can ignore the whole thing. No one is forcing them to do anything.
Do you live there? How is the monarchy harming you?
What do you think of Iranian schoolgirls being persecuted? Somehow, if I were to get indignant about another country - I'd find another besides Great Britain.

(58,785 posts)Including that DU, meant to be a community for discussion of liberal ideas (broad- and open-minded "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness"!) has drawn a subset "who think there is only ONE way to live..." Only ONE narrow, rigid position on almost any subject of group interest.
And yes, if ONLY the angry, noisy passion against the powerless British monarchy was instead directed against murderous authoritarian leaders with huge power, such as Russia's, Nicaragua's, etc. Why isn't it?

(51,308 posts)I've long since lost count about the "I hate the British royal family" threads, but you know something?
I've not seen even a one about the Saudi royals. Funny, that.

(115,869 posts)DU will be saturated with much huffing and puffing from people who proclaim the evils of symbolic constitutional monarchies and proudly announce that they will not be watching a ceremony of another nation that has absolutely no effect on our foreign policy but lets them feel better about living in a far superior country that elects its leaders and there are no powerful hereditary dynasties (unless for crackpot anti-vaxxers or the feckless sons of presidents) and in which there are no class differences and everyone enjoys an egalitarian utopia.

(512 posts)I had a seminar at a Uni couple months ago in Manchester and many students had T-shirts and sweatshirts that read God Fuck the Queen, Fuck the Royal Family etc. The older generations who simp on the royal families are dying off. The public opinion on that shit show is the lowest its ever been.

you really want to compare the MAGA asshole with a tradition of thousands of years? Tfg was a creep, a boor who managed to enthrall all the other boor in this country. He was the President/
You cannot compare a president of the US to a British King. Apples and oranges.

and certainly nobody not a citizen. I will likely watch part of the coronation pageantry on tv, sitting in far-off California, without rancor.
So what is the problem here?
After 9-11 Americans all over the world were flying the Flag, wearing US flag pins, and pledging allegiance to the flag. Congresscritters went out on the steps of the Capitol and sang God Bless America. Even I was caught up in the moment of unity.
So, another country wants to pledge allegiance to their national symbol? Big deal.

The Brits in general love their Royal Family but this piece is not going
over well. Especially in certain parts of the UK, like Scotland.
