But you seem to be happy that certain areas of the country, particularly the MAGAt-infested ones have a low life expectancy.

It’s sort of reminiscent of the people who would like very much for the red states to secede and hang all us blue dots out to dry.

I won’t dignify your vax/mask comments with a reply. SMDH

While some factors in an area no doubt affect everyone, they don't all do it equally. If you live surrounded by MAGAs but aren't one yourself. you are probably making choices about your life and health which wold lead to a longer life expectancy for you than for MAGAts in the same area. I for one would certainly hope so.

65 you are contacted by your family physicians and they send you for a battery of tests including blood tests, mammograms, colonoscopies etc. They actively start looking for problems because you are now covered by Medicare!

The stomach doctor noticed that my hemoglobin was low so I was set up for yet another upper GI scope and in 2 months, (?) I have to go back to see how the medicine worked since they found an ulcer. I know that is thorough and all but it just seems like a lot and I don't know how much of it is necessary.

What I mean is there are so many tests and this is retirement alley!

Blackfeet Rez
Rocky Boy/ Fort Belknap Rezes
Fort Peck Rez
South Central is the Crow and Cheyenne Rez

Of my Native patients here on this small Rez, I’ve only 2 men over 80, and maybe 8 women. Not a lot of 70 year-olds either. I do have 2 ladies in their 90’s and one of my patients grandmother lived to 104!

There are deaths and funerals every week. Overdoses, car wrecks, suicides are the leading non medical causes. Diabetes related deaths hands down the leading medical cause

Edit you can see the Dakota Rezes on the map and the Menominee REz in Wisc

On the other hand, the low life expectancy in the South isn't confined to the so-called Black Belt, and includes a lot of very white places as well (West Virginia and Appalachia). Hard to say for sure for me.

It has it because it's full of filthy rich people, who can afford the best of everything, including food, healthcare, preventative healthcare... Meanwhile, in one of those low-expectancy areas, part of the Navajo reservation in Arizona just got electricity for the first time EVER earlier this year.

Thus, a substantial percentage of the population are National Park Service employees. As in, great pay and benefits. So they not only have health insurance, but also are able to afford the co-pays and all the rest to stay healthy.

Plus the park staff are almost always quite physically active, which contributes to longevity.

It's Dying of Whiteness, by Jonathan M. Metzl MD. It was first published in 2020.

The book of course does not explain everything about that map, but it does go a long way to illustrate what is going on in places like Appalachia and Florida, among many others.
