TIMEOmitted from the public debate about DeSantiss policies is almost any discussion of his actual record of governancewhat exactly he has delivered to the citizens of his state, especially those without seven-figure incomes and lush investment portfolios.
Even a cursory dip into the statistics of social and economic well-being reveals that Florida falls short in almost any measure that matters to the lives of its citizens. More than four years into the DeSantis governorship, Florida continues to languish toward the bottom of state rankings assessing the quality of health care, school funding, long-term elder care, and other areas key to a successful society.
Florida may be the place where woke goes to dieas DeSantis is fond of sayingbut it is also where teachers salaries are among the lowest in the nation, unemployment benefits are stingier than in any other state, and wage theft flourishes with little interference from the DeSantis administration. In 2021, DeSantis campaigned against a successful ballot initiative to raise the states minimum wage, which had been stuck at $8.65 an hour. Under DeSantiss watch, the Sunshine State has not exactly been a workers paradise.

(58,785 posts)I don't understand the hostility toward Florida's Democrats. It's typically manifested as denial that they even exist. Apparently it's irresistibly satisfying to roll them over into the MAGAs to make a bigger, bloodier target to wish vengeful fates on.
Do you know posts hoping everyone in Florida dies were common here for a while and will be again? They come in waves.

(6,664 posts)It was just a stepping stone to being president. He has used and abused Florida from the beginning. It was to be his springboard. What happened to the people in Florida was inconsequential. We are just props.

(23,798 posts)Whoever wrote that article may want to look at his recent poll numbers. He's bringing nothing to the table and the GOP is rallying around their God, drumpf.
"Trump Has Big Lead Over DeSantis: Trump has a 34-percentage-point lead over Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis among potential Republican primary voters (56% to 22%). Since April 1, Trumps lead over DeSantis has increased 7 points. "

(1,983 posts)I don't think the nonstop culture war stuff is doing DeSantis any favors. It seems to be turning off the remaining reasonable Republican voters who hoped he might be a Trump alternative. Instead, it puts him into the same group as Trump-- off-balance ideologues who keep on churning out chaos and controversy.
All of the socialeconomic trends the snippet is referencing are important, but as the article says, already predated DeSantis. The argument that he hasn't fixed those things isn't as strong as the one that he's actively causing trouble.
