Seems to be a bit of debate about showing victims. Remember...

that after the Germans surrendered, Eisenhower forced "good Germans" who either didn't know, or didn't want to know what was going on in those camps to visit them and the victims just to make sure they got it.

No doubt there were some thoughts and prayers in 1946.

Rub their noses in it. Let them know there really aren't any good guys with a gun. The good guys got rid of them

There were graphic pictures in the magazines, not just on teevee. I will never forget the "napalm girl" or another photo set that I saw in LIFE Magazine of children in a MASH unit being treated for wounds of a variety from land mines to stray or intentional gunfire. I remember one picture in particular, a boy's arm was torn to shreds but a military bullet. It was in B&W, I have never, to this day, been able to remove it from my memory and feeling, as a young teen with younger siblings, the horror of imagining experiencing that sort of thing. Back then, also, military kids weren't shielded from a lot of realities we now hide from view.

That being said, I have mixed feelings about showing the gore though I recognize the power in doing so.

A more accurate comparison is whether the survivors of the camps or the relatives of the deceased who were fortunate enough to live outside of Europe during the Holocaust should be forced to view photos of their own tortured and murdered relatives and close friends.

It's one thing for strangers to view the films of the concentration camps. But what if the film showed the mangled and twisted bodies of your spouse, child, mother, grandparents and you had to see that every day every place you went as an inescapable graphic reminder of what they endured?

The Nazi officials and common people of Germany deserved to be forced to see what happened. The survivors or loved ones of the deceased NEVER "deserve" to be continually exposed to the horrors that their loved ones endured.

It certainly may be emotional for family and friends of holocaust victims. But not all. Some like Mrs. Till thought the opposite and was disgusted by not exposing anonymous mobs. She was inconvenienced (an understatement I know) as a lesson for the greater good.

Which is better I don’t know. Like I wrote, I read your reply and instinctively agree. And also agree something must be done.

But publishing photos of mass shootings does not expose an anonymous mob.

In the case of Emmett Till, everyone knew who the Klan people were in the community, but nobody would act to stop them. Mrs. Till wanted the silent White community to be shocked into breaking their silence. That case is not transferable to the idea of publishing photos of mass shootings today.

I fully agree that something has to be done to stop the violence. For the past year, I have listened to The Buffalo NPR station's program, What's Next? which began after the mass shooting there last year. The program has had many discussions about race, discrimination, and violence regarding Blacks, Native Americans, Holocaust survivors, LGBTQ people, Muslims, and Asians.

Some of the discussions are about community efforts at deescalation of violence and use of guns. There are many approaches being used in organ and semi urban communities. They do not ever suggest quick solutions like publishing photos of victims. They talk about the relentless dedication and efforts necessary to make change, including organized, constant pressure on legislators.

I favor confronting the anti gun control legislators constantly with questions about whether they have personally been to a shooting site while the bodies and blood are still there. Demand that legislators go to the sites as part of their responsibility. Dismiss them as murder enablers if they refuse. Make it stick.

The goal is to make guns and shootings a priority election issue, a deal breaker for candidates.
