Texas congressman slammed for prayers comment after mall shooting

By Jennifer Hassan
May 7, 2023 at 9:54 a.m. EDT

The Texas congressman who represents the latest community reeling from a mass killing has pushed back against Americans who say more than prayers are needed to curb the violence, labeling them “people that don’t believe in an almighty god.”

Rep. Keith Self (R) appeared on CNN on Saturday after a gunman killed at least eight people, including children, at an outlet mall in the Dallas suburb of Allen. His response to a question about prayer not preventing such tragedies immediately fueled anger — with many on social media slamming his words as “meaningless” and “pathetic.”

It is God “who is absolutely in control of our lives,” said Self, who identified himself as a Christian and stressed that he wanted “to stay away from politics” and focus on the victims. “Prayers are important, and they are powerful in the families who are devastated right now.”

Of course humans should do what promotes safety, whether you pray or not.

I hope he gets lashed by comments. So insensitive

But, this “Republican” makes his living by looking the other way, which is the way of the coward. And the body of Republican politicians comprise this cowardly party we all can see. The people who vote for him, and all Republicans like him, apparently aren’t close enough to the murders to care, which is to say they are apathetic to the murders. They want to dismiss it from their conscience with “thoughts and prayers”, even though many of them know that is wrong when they speak it. But, for them, the murders have been so wrapped up inside their ideology along with all the other nonsense that goes with that ideology that they can’t separate any of the parts.

So, the masses of R voters live with the murders as long as it doesn’t happen to them, and keep vomiting out their nonsensical responses to the murders each time it happens.

Not in the 'God's in absolute control so of course he saw to these people dying, trust his plan' swill this moral cretin spews, but by observing that there is far more profession of Christianity, and more church attendance, in the United States than in other prosperous democracies, which somehow manage nonetheless not to cook off in massacre by privately owned firearm on a daily basis.
