That phrase can best be exemplified in the German election of April 1932 between an 84-year-old Paul von Hindenburg, the presidential candidate for re-election and his much younger opponent.
The alternative lost by more than 16 points.

(1,203 posts)...but I'll explain.
In 1932 an elderly statesman in Germany ran for re-election as President at the age of 84. The current criticism of Joe Biden could have been leveled at Hindenburg at the time. His opponent, Adolf Hitler was just 43. Young and vigorous. But, you see, there is much more to which candidate is better qualified to lead a nation than just his (or her) age.
With the 20-20 hindsight of history, you would have to say that voting for Hindenburg in the German election held in April, 1932 was certainly the better choice.
Hence, don't compare Hindenburg with the Almighty, compare him to the alternative.
If we come down to a Biden-Trump, or a Biden-DeSantis election, Biden's age should be the least important issue. A loyal American should vote for Biden, under such circumstances, even if he was in a coma.
I self-deleted post #2 because it was a dupe
Yeah, your post implies the opposite. Suggesting that age will result in a Biden defeat. Thanks for clarifying

(1,203 posts)Hindenburg won that election by 16 points, head-to-head in a runoff. It is all in the link.
Hitler's Nazi party later defeated Otto Wels' Christian Democrats in November of 1932 and became Chancellor. When Hindenburg died, Hitler took his Reichstag majority and combined the two posts to become dictator. The rest, as they say, is history.
