The rise of white nationalist Hispanics
Russell Contreras, Astrid Galván
Nick Fuentes, identified as a "white supremacist" in Justice Department filings, made headlines last week for hosting a white nationalist conference in Florida. His father is also half Mexican American.
The big picture: Fuentes is part of a small but increasingly visible number of far-right provocateurs with Hispanic backgrounds who spread racist, antisemitic messages.
Driving the news: Cuban American Enrique Tarrio, the former leader of the Proud Boys, a group the Anti-Defamation League calls an extremist group with a violent agenda, was arrested Tuesday and charged with conspiracy in connection to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
What they're saying: Experts tell Axios far-right extremism within the Latino community stems from three sources: Hispanic Americans who identify as white; the spread of online misinformation; and lingering anti-Black, antisemitic views among U.S. Latinos that are rarely openly discussed.

Posts show mall gunman researched attack, had Nazi tattoos
By JAKE BLEIBERG, GENE JOHNSON and LOLITA C. BALDOR
DALLAS (AP) The man accused of killing eight people and wounding several others in a mass shooting at a suburban Dallas shopping mall researched when it was busiest and posted photos on social media in mid-April of a store near where he ultimately started his attack.
The posts by Mauricio Garcia on a Russian social networking site suggest the 33-year-old had been planning the attack for weeks before he stepped out of a silver sedan and opened fire Saturday. Among the dead were two elementary school-age sisters, a couple and their 3-year-old son, and a security guard.
Garcias online activity also betrayed a fascination with white supremacy and mass shootings, which he described as sport. Photos he posted showed large Nazi tattoos on his arm and torso, including a swastika and the SS lightning bolt logo of Hitlers paramilitary forces.
Allen also is connected to another of Texas recent mass shootings. Patrick Crusius lived there in 2019 before he posted a racist screed online warning of a Hispanic invasion and drove to El Paso, where he opened fire at a Walmart, killing 23. Crusius, 24, pleaded guilty to federal hate crime and weapons charges in February.

(2,173 posts)I posted here once about my interactions on this subject with some Hispanics in Chicago. I do not feel comfortable posting in depth about it here, suffice to say I can agree with at least some of the conclusions of this article based on my personal experiences over several decades.

(4,741 posts)Of hating on Jews. Toledo was one of the worst, but Aragon, Castile and Leon were awful, too.
Starting in the late 6th century CE after the conversion of Visigoth ruler Recared from Arianism to Catholicism, assorted Spanish christian domains enacted ever more draconian policies regarding Jews in Spain:
Forcible baptisms.
Denying Jews the right to hold public office.
Making it illegal to conduct any Jewish rites.
Destroying synagogues.
Seizing children from Jewish families and forcibly converting them.
Denying Jews the rite to engage in commerce.
Seizing any property owned by Jews.
Legalizing corporal punishment of Jews for being Jews.
Enslaving Jews.
Expelling them from the country if they refused to convert.
And, for the really sick part, requiring Jews to kill other Jews who converted but relapsed.
They even went after any christians who refused to harm Jews or to enforce edicts against them.
And that's before the Moors came to the peninsula. The Moors sort of forced them to play nice with Jews for a while. But only for a little while. It wasn't long before they were back to their same old anti-Semitic terror again.
The Crusades kicked off by killing Jews right there at home before heading to the Middle East.
Oh--and the Crusade era is when Castile and Leon required Jews to wear yellow badges to identify them. The more Moorish Spain weakened starting in the late 13th century, the more the same old draconian rules (and a few more!) came back into play in christian Spain.
So the problem existed long before those evil thugs known as Ferdinand and Isabella came along.

(73 posts)A reminder, Hispanics are like any other regional group. When you say Hispanics, you're really just saying "people who had ancestors that came from Latin America or Spain." Its like saying "Asians." There are a slew of different cultures, languages, colors, background and classes.
Further, like nations everywhere people coming from different countries have different views of people from other countries. Don't expect someone from Peru to like someone from Spain just because their language originates in the same area, any more than someone from Nigeria likes or dislikes an English speaker from Singapore.
The only thing they really have in common is awesome food.

(169,761 posts)which means they can be from Spain, South/Central America, the Caribbean, and yes, even some still speaking it in the Philippines, a former Spanish colony. I.e., a number of ethnic groups.
However those Hitler-obsessive neo-white supremacists leave out the fact that a very narrow definition of what was dubbed "Aryan" would never include them (and even back during that Nazi era, it was twisted and distorted where not even the average European would fit into the definition).
The one big thing that separates black folk from everyone else here in the U.S. (not counting the more recent/post-slavery immigrants here from the continent of Africa and the Caribbean) is most others know their historic ethnic background (even when mixed) - and that applies to indigenous European, North/Central/South American, Indian/Asian/Pacific Islander, and Australian.
Zincwarrior
(73 posts)Exactly.
Also understand the terms Hispanic, Latino, and Chicano are not identical. The tend to arise from different areas of the US.
Hispanic is used more in Texas/Southwest, whereas Chicano feels more like a term used in Illinois or NY. In NY they tend to refer more to the islands: Puerto Rican and Dominican immigrants.
Florida was traditionally Cuban, but now has a whole slew of different (primarily South American) communities including recent influxes of persons from Puerto Rico and Venezuela.
Texas and California were Hispanic before there was a US - Spanish then Mexican. There have been waves of Central Americans and now South Americans arriving in California and Texas. By waves I mean millions.
A final really really important note. Typically "Mexican food in Arizona and New Mexican would be called Sonoran. Tex Mex has more cheese. With the influxes of Central American and 'northern' South America entire new flavors and ranges have arisen. MY BELT SIZE REFLECTS THIS...
BumRushDaShow
(169,761 posts)(I am in Philly), the Caribbean Hispanics from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic - go by their island names, e.g., Puertorriqueños.
I don't think I have ever heard any here reference the term "Chicano" here, but if anything, "Latino" (to reference to being from "Latin America" part of the world including the Caribbean, and more recently, assigning a gender as in sometimes use of "Latina" for instance).
Even then, their pronunciations of Spanish words are different across the different origin nationalities, e.g., something as simple as the word "Yo" is pronounced differently by different groups (Puerto Ricans will say "Djo" vs others that will will to more of the "ye" sound).
And LOL @ "belt size"!

(23,175 posts)The original Spanish people gave us Torquemada, The Spanish Inquisition, after 'discovery' invaded, enslaved and plundered Native American civilizations across North, Middle and South America. Just off the top of my head
I've been thinking about the Hispanic/Latino white nationalist trend since the mass shooting, and it is easy to remember things about the Spanish we learned in history. I can't think of many nations whose people have turned over a new leaf. There are the oppressors and the oppressed. A lot of the countries who came out on top centuries ago, stayed on top. White nationalism, fascism, is just another way to maintain the status quo for all people in all places who want the oppression to stay in place.
Basically, the street thugs of of world, united.

(69,364 posts)The British people who settled the United States did a marvelous job of imposing chattel slavery here for 500 years. And I've been in museums in England and seen the torture implements my ancestors used on one another.

(23,175 posts)The Native Americans harmed each other. The English hurt each other and others. The Chinese hurt each other and others. The nations and cultures that had better arms and more power dished it out to the nations and cultures with poorer arms and less power. Every nation we know about in history had slaves and there has been hierarchies from time out of mind. So, I'm saying it is no surprise that Hispanics will join forces with the current fascist trend. And it seems tht even if most people wouldn't torture or kill other people, most humans will go along, to get along.
The only country I can think of that hasn't been bellicose or hateful is Switzerland.

(4,741 posts)As soon as the Portuguese and Spanish started "discovering" New Worlds, they were itching to take on "savages" as slaves to work their newly conquered lands. The Catholic church accommodated them with a papal bull authorizing it.
The Spanish started enslaving Native Americans about 10 minutes after they arrived in the New World, long before the British showed up. They were also the first to bring African slaves to the US:
Historical records document the presence of black slaves dating back to their arrival in what was known as Spanish Florida in 1565. They built military forts, hunted food, cut wood and later even created a settlement for freed blacks, Fort Mose.
https://www.usatoday.com/in-depth/news/nation/2019/12/16/american-slavery-traces-roots-st-augustine-florida-not-jamestown/4205417002/
The British deserve their own share of blame for the evils of chattel slavery, but they learned its value from the Spanish.

(10,478 posts)pretty much everyone has had their turn at being the oppressed and the oppressor. Just depends on the time period.
If white supremacy continues to rise in the U.S. too many people will lose freedoms. The flood they have in mind is lapping at our feet.
The courtroom is capricious at this time. Depending on the leanings of the judge or the jury (rittenhouse got off, mcmichaels and byran didn't) America in general can't rely on getting the rightwing murderers off the street. If the cops kill a mass killer, or the mass killer kills themselves, they are off the street. As long as people are gun crazy and murderous, immediate judge, jury and execution might be all that holds the white supremacists back.

(11,419 posts)In the 1940s, people of Mexican descent were legally classed as "white" in California (see the case Sanchez v. Sharp, 1948, which struck down California's anti-miscegenation law). When I was growing up back in the 50s the "lumpers" were predominant, so only three "races" of humans were talked about - Caucasoid, Negroid, and Mongoloid (everyone who didn't fall conveniently into one of these categories was considered to be a mixture). Nowadays the "splitters" are in the ascendancy and people are putting themselves into a lot more categories.
As for the range of people covered by "Hispanic" - the Spanish colonizers started this back in the 1500s. By the 1700s they were producing Casta paintings to illustrate the 32 different combinations of Spaniard/Native American/Black they recognized.

(30,518 posts)Hispanics can be of any race. This is the only country where a white person from Latin America is not considered white. I find it ignorant and arrogant. Do we think in the U.S. that Europeans only settled here and in Canada? Some countries, like Argentina for example, demographically speaking have a larger Caucasian population than the U.S. Argentina was one of the ten wealthiest nations in the world until WWII. During the great migration to the Americas, it received more European immigrants than any other country with the exception of the U.S., more than Canada and Australia. Therefore, Latin Americans can be both Hispanic and white.
That doesn't mean that people like Fuentes and the others are any less disturbing than the rest of the white supremacists.
