"SNIP........
If you wonder why the Biden team was described as positively giddy after Donald Trumps town hall appearance, its because he showed him far out of touch with the majority of Americans.
Consider the following:
* Trump wouldnt say if he wanted Ukraine to win the war with Russia, but a recent YouGov poll showed 67% of Americans want Ukraine to prevail.
* Trump declined to declare Vladimir Putin a war criminal, but a recent Quinnipiac poll finds 80% of Americans think he is.
* Trump said he would pardon a large portion of the January 6 rioters at the Capitol, but a recent Morning Consult-Politico poll found that 68% of Americans dont think they should be pardoned.
* Trump suggested Republicans allow the U.S. to default on its debt, but a recent Washington Post-ABC News poll finds 58% think that would be irresponsible.
* Trump took credit for repealing Roe v. Wade, but a recent NPR/PBS Newshour/Marist poll finds 61% of Americans support abortion rights.
By any definition, Trumps positions are extreme to the majority of voters.
And the best part for Democrats? They have him on video saying all of these things.
Said one Biden aide: It was quite efficient. Weeks worth of damning content in one hour.

ShazzieB
(22,582 posts)I wonder if you could expand on that, in case I'm not the only one. What was the original route, and when did Trump expand it?
GreenWave
(12,641 posts)This was reported early on until they went crazy. "IQ 45 extended the route."
This could have been a distortion of what happened to inspire the insurrectionists to go the extra blocks: IOW tell the media the false news that the insurrectionists now had IQ 45's permission to go to the Capital. Media backs away from its role.
https://consortiumnews.com/2021/01/14/organized-march-to-capitol-was-not-permitted-rally-organizers-warned-white-house/
And while I searched for the FOIA permit for the rioters I have yet to find it:
https://nsarchive.gwu.edu/briefing-book/foia/2021-05-04/capitol-riot-documents-you-should-read-part-3
I just remember hearing that on the "news" and thinking nothing but trouble is coming.

(23,496 posts)night and most people that vote for Trump don't even have an idea about all the horrible things he has done.
One of the biggest is his "program" for keeping people from coming to this country by taking their children away from them! Kaitlin Collins let that one slide when he said Obama was the one who built the "jails". She should have explained that Obama did not do that as a tactic like Trump did - to keep people away and steal their kids. He did it to keep minor who came across the border until they could be reunited with family. People need to know this damn it!

Certainly it is a second-level effect, and not a direct effect. But it is far from zero.

That is WHY people like W and Trump got elected in the first place, while actually losing the popular vote.

(5,131 posts)It disgusts me that a state like California with nearly 40 million people only gets two senators when LA County alone has more people than ten red low population states combined which gets 20 senators. How TF is that fair?

(17,802 posts)Boggles the mind to think that 42% (even in a wildly innaccurate poll) would be ok with a world wide financial meltdown and a depression at home.
Or do republicans not need any money to pay bills or buy stuff?

The Right Wing tells them simple stories about everything being a zero-sum game. The RW tells them simple stories about government spending being just like their own small family budget.
Democrats need to counter with a simple story about how Uncle Sam uses a credit card, and has already made purchases, and now needs to pay the bill for those purchases.

(17,802 posts)They get to blame the dems for illegally grabbing power. They may even impeach biden for doing it.
They will impeach him regardless, but it would be a handy excuse.
It does get around default however, so it's probably the right thing to do in the end.
Of course they will shut down the gov't over budget demands. But there isn't much we can do about that right now.

I would bet out of the remaining 42% a large portion would be "NO OPINION or I don't know"
Only the Trumptard rubes would be OK with a US default because they're too stupid to understand the consequences.

(11,203 posts)American voters, do you really want to identify with this group of selected Trump supporters? These adoring fans are the only people Trump cares about impressing. Trump thrives off of their adoration that Trump can get away with anything he wants to. Supporters that condone bullying women and boasting about taking away their rights. Supporters that prefer the strong arming and use if it's citizens to fight an ugly war from afar of Putin, to the scrappy defend your country and its people or die trying Zelenskyy. Supporters gullible enough to try another insurrection thinking they will get pardons. Etc.

Freethinker65
(11,203 posts)But from what I have read, the GOP/Trump friendly audience (cult?) approved of and liked what they were hearing.
Trump wanted to be seen and heard among his core voters and supporters. If I were watching from home undecided, that would have been unsettling to watch.

(11,767 posts)We know that Trump is a disaster. That has never really been a secret.
Many of those issues aren't what people vote about. They primarily vote about how they "feel" about the economy and the "direction" of the country. Granted that Trump can be his own worst enemy. He is simply a stupid and arrogant man. The problem is that the election is a "numbers" game. Trump has to motivate enough Republicans so that they can cheat their way in, with the states the GOP controls being able to significantly put their thumbs on the scale. President Biden also has to motivate people to get out and vote. There may be a bump of Democratic voters coming out to make sure the disaster that is Trump, does not get near the White House again, but that is not a given, especially if the economy starts heading south. Between holding one chamber of Congress and holding the other AND the Presidency, it is not a given that the Republicans will be blamed for a poor economy, even if their behavior with the debt ceiling and policies in general would absolutely be the cause of the down turn.
Effete Snob

Caliman73
(11,767 posts)Point is, they should not be.
This is nothing that hasn't been seen of Trump in the past. People keep thinking that he will hit some magical mark that will "be his doom".
I don't think that Trump will or can win another national election. He is too polarizing, but I am not kicking up my feet and relaxing about my thought. I will continue to talk to people, argue, volunteer, donate, etc... to do my part to ensure that he has no chance.
Trump is an idiot and we should all feel a little thankful that he is. The scary part, and what we should be aware of is that a not insignificant portion of Americans are just as big of idiots and cruel, and Trump still serves some purpose to the wealthy and powerful in this country and they would rather support him to maintain their power, than to allow actual progressives to gain a foothold in government and actually start working for the interests of the majority of non-wealthy people, because is would come at a very minor inconvenience to those wealthy people.
This is not "politics as usual" or the same political situation as the 80's, 90's, or even 2000's. We are trying to stave off the rise of fascism here. No one should be giddy. Even when Trump is swept into the dustbin of history, people should not be giddy.
Once Fascism AND Conservatism have been thoroughly discredited and everyone is embarrassed for having believed it was a viable worldview, then we can all celebrate.
peggysue2
(12,532 posts)Because we've been here before during a disastrous 2016 election, and then a ridiculous but damaging contested election and subsequent attempted coup.
Who would have thunk it?
I do believe Joe Biden has the advantage as a successful incumbent, but that doesn't mean Republicans and Trumpers won't try every trick in the book to corrupt, twist and/or steal the 2024 election, anything and everything to win. In addition, we have the No Labels con, the supposedly middle-of-the-road 3rd party hat trick and Steve Bannon's hand-picked spoiler in Robert Kennedy, Jr. Not that I think Kennedy has a chance during the primary but anything Bannon is attached to is a genuine ratf*ck.
And then, there are the unknowables. Trump has a much better team this time out, the sort of professional campaign people who can load up on lipstick on the pig applications and actual election strategies. Unpredictable world and domestic events can easily turn elections upside down.
Despite all that, I expect Joe Biden to be the clear winner in 2024. But no one should think this will be a cakewalk. More a nasty, ugly slog to the finish. Though I didn't watch last night's townhall/rally on CNN, I've read enough about it to know Trump did himself no favors. Except with the MAGA diehards for whom nothing is too low or cruel or indecent.
I imagine the Biden team can indeed envision all the useful ad material that Trump freely provided last night. Makes sense; the ads write themselves. But I think we need to tamp down any giddiness until we win this thing. And win it bigger than last time out. Because this craven circus needs to be flattened, along with its demented, vindictive ringmaster.

The thing is that the only way to do that is to have Ukraine give up part of Ukraine. They won't ever do that. How could trump make them?
It would have to be something else... Some other great thing that Russia wants. Bag of worms there.
So no, absolutely positively not! could trump stop the carnage in what'd he say? 24 hrs?
