I try not to publish rumors but there is so much being talked about. And its coming from people who are often pessimistic.
That southern flank looks mighty vulnerable.

(15,511 posts)Going to be a hell of a fight, the Russians have built extensive defense works.
Attacking a well defended position usually costs 2-3:1 casualties...
If the Russians follow tradition... and defensive combat history... they will seek to surround the Ukrainian forces in a pocket and counter attack.
But do the Russians have the leadership and initiative thatt hey did in WW2???
We'll see...
Also, sources I read say that the Russian Air Force has been particularly active the last 2 weeks and may be heavily involved in defensive action.

The 72nd Brigade is in retreat, according to most accounts, and the Institute for the Study of War, which is a pretty reliable source that takes care to not jump the gun, reports that "Ukrainian forces likely broke through some Russian lines in localized counterattacks near Bakhmut" (https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-may-11-2023)

(113,131 posts)and the Russians are just plain done, at least in the Bakhmut area.
Anyone who survived it will be going home and they are not going to be happy with their government.
Russia is going to be an ungodly mess when this is over. Putin has destroyed any possibility of political opposition, so he's leaving a power vacuum as bad as the one the collapse of the Soviet Union left, maybe even worse. Apparently Russians are posting about what shape an interim government is likely to take.
They know it's over, too. Putin just refuses to read the memo.
