The class of 2023 at New College in Sarasota is having an alternative graduation ceremony, as the new DeSantis-appointed board of trustees/wrecking crew has invited a trumpy covid-denying whackaloon to be the speaker at the official ceremony.
Bill Penzey, one of the great heroes of our time, IMO, has posted about it in his newsletter, setting out the situation, with links to a Wonkette article, and asking for contributions to the students support fund.
I so appreciate Bill Penzeys activism, as I know other folks here do. If you dont know Penzeys spices, you should check them out. They are wonderful. And sign up for the newsletter. It will inspire you.
I know the people at New College, students and faculty, appreciate knowing they are not fighting alone.

(6,474 posts)I have loved the company for decades, before the internet existed. The spice selection has always been outstanding. I made chili tonight and used many ingredients from Penzeys: whole ancho chili pepper, hot chili powder, adobo, coriander, hot seasoned salt, black pepper, Aleppo pepper, cloves and sumac. Its delicious!
All this and wonderful, kindly, spirited activism.

(27,352 posts)We were the Jamaica Bay Nat'l Park in southern Queens (nyc) and our guide pointed out the staghorn sumac shrub.
We shipped off some berry branches.
Either we ran water over it into cups, or took home and did the same. It has a lemony taste. And very pretty looking.

It was a Girl Scout thing to make lemonade by steeping the flower stalks in hot water.

That's really neat, though. 👍
I've seen it in that one place way down at the other end (south) of NYC (in southern Queens). Very distinctive ~ I'd recognize it again.

Various Christmas and birthday gifts have been Penzey's spices. Great spices, and ut feels good to support this wonderful company.

(5,932 posts)Stir-fried cut up chicken thighs with a good dose of their Greek seasoning, and added a decent amount of Fox Point (to add some onion flavors). Added a cut-up cauliflower and served it over brown rice. Just finished eating when I saw this message.
Been using Penzeys for almost 30 years now; it's always excellent, and (especially nowadays!) it's good to support a company that takes decent stands on issues.

Arizona Dreaming is really good SW mix and has no salt added.
Hand-mixed from: ancho chili pepper, black pepper, onion, garlic, paprika, spices, cumin, citric acid, Mexican oregano, cilantro, lemon peel, chipotle pepper, red pepper, jalapeño, cocoa and natural smoke flavoring.

(27,352 posts)it looks like either a Penzey's store or a store that carried a lot of their herbs & spices closed for good near Grand Central Station. Nearest are miles & miles away in CN or NJ.
