Because he has to lie to cover for his previous lies.
His lies are like a house of cards.
For example, when he says that January 6th was a "beautiful day", he has to lie to cover for his previous lies about why it happened? He has built one lie upon another until we have reached this point. When he lied about why he invited the violent rioters to the Capitol on January 6th, he always needed another lie to cover for them.
When he says that he had the absolute right to take documents out of the White House and to his mansion in Mar-a-Lago, it is the continuing lie to cover the fact that he stole top secret documents. When he says that everybody did it, but in a worse way, he is covering his lies.
When he says that the election was rigged, it is a lie to cover the previous lies about stolen votes, and the lie that he won the election by a landslide.
He has no choice but to lie because everything he has said in the past is a lie and the only thing that can protect those lies is another lie.
He is a serial liar and if he told the truth just once, his entire house of cards would come crumbling down.

(16,241 posts)It's worked for him for 75 years, and he's never spent a night in any jail. He'll fundraise of the sexual assault verdict and probably come out ahead.

(115,564 posts)It is not possible for him to tell the truth. His life is built around lies. And there is never a shortage of lies because they can be created to fit any purpose.

(79,233 posts)I agree that right now, the defendent is lying to cover past lies. Those lies were told to cover past actions.
However, it is important to remember that sociopaths frequently lie when there is no advantage to it. That is their nature.

(21,836 posts)He has never been called out for all his lies and he has avoided prosecution and financial penalties through lying. It just works for him. Why stop lying now?

(115,564 posts)Then he lied about sending investigators to Hawaii and what they had discovered. It's always one lie to cover another.

(79,233 posts)I think that it has either worked for him, or not created serious consequences, for most of his life. He's lost civil cases before, but not of the type that really inflicted damage.
In recent years, some of them have started catching up to him. the Defendent University case didn't really hurt him financially, so much as it did in terms of his reputation ...... he hates to lose in public. His lying nature certainly was a factor in the 2020 election. And his compulsive lying since then is catching up to him.
Yet this is merely what is in public view. His lying to some of his legal team about the stolen classified documents will come to haunt him. But that merely hints at what I meant about his lying, even about unimportant things, and including where there is absolutely no benefit to him for lying. For that is the nature of a sociopath.

(115,564 posts)He has perfected the art of lying. He has created his own reality and has persuaded a large proportion of the country to go along with him. Eventually, his lies will catch up to him and there will be consequences, because the lies are now about national security and life and death issues. It is no longer a simple lie about how many square feet are in his apartment.

(79,233 posts)If I were to speculate, I'd venture the environmental factor that led to this was his relationship with his father, who was also a disgusting bag of shit dust. And as an adult, he learned from a specific attorney how to lie in contracts and legal cases.

(115,564 posts)He must continue to lie to maintain credibility with his supporters and his cultish base. It is no longer possible for him to tell the truth.

(115,564 posts)...but he mostly lies to protect his own self-interests, in my opinion.
Nothing would be so devastating to him as losing his "brand".
