WATE Knoxville

LENOIR CITY, Tenn. (WATE) — A man who attended the Lenoir City High School graduation Friday night died after a gun he was illegally carrying on school property fired accidentally, according to Lenoir City Police Chief Don White.

Christopher Sean Lampkin was shot in his right inner thigh when his gun went off after watching the commencement at the football field, according to a Lenoir City Police Department report obtained by WATE 6 on Monday.

A bullet from a .38 caliber Derringer struck a femoral artery causing significant blood loss. The death has been ruled accidental.

The narrative in the report states that Lampkin and a relative were sitting on steps waiting for their Uber to arrive when Lampkin stood up to put his jacket on. The family member told police that’s when, “… she heard a small ‘pop.’ ”

Sever the Femoral Artery and you have a very short window to death.

One of the officers responding was shot (friendly fire). Instead of waiting for an ambulance the cops pilot him in a cruiser and brought him to a local hospital where a vascular surgeon was in the OR by chance and after a brutal hour long battle in the ER, they able to clamp him continue blood infusions and save his life. Dickie Donohue, he had to have one hell of a will to live.

for the family. I have to wonder why he had a gun on school property. That is usually forbidden.

It was a derringer, just the right size for stuffing in your pocket with the loose change. Well and good, until one accidentally blows their nuts off while reaching in to pay for that fudge pop at the Good Humor truck.

Derringers don't have safeties and are subject firing at the slightest bump.

Stuff the gun in your waistband without a holster.
Insanely dangerous.

Femoral artery or losing genitals, the winner is still removed from the gene pool.

Can we finally put that myth to bed? A thigh shot is as deadly as chest shot, period. If you're gonna put a bullet into someone you intend to kill them, full stop.

Also, in this case, nothing of value was lost.

and we each had brothers in grade school. One day he was cleaning his rifle and his brother was killed when he got shot in the head. Damn, when you're 15, what do you say to somebody that has that happen. He came back to school in a few days which was good because the longer he had waited, the harder it would have been.
