Michigan House bills would strengthen unions' political fundraising

Unions could more easily deduct political contributions from their members’ paychecks under legislation that moved to the House floor this week.

Two bills, HB 4230 and HB 4234, would allow unions to set up payroll deduction systems for political donations with their members’ employers. The approach had been banned a decade prior under a law enacted by the Republican-controlled state government.

“When this the original act was put in place in 2012, it made an unfair distinction between labor unions of private and public sector employees,” Rep. Jimmie Wilson, D-Ypsilanti, said in the House Elections Committee Tuesday. “What this does is bring fairness in regards to political contributions, being made automatically through payroll deductions.”

Members join the program, then have a set amount withheld from each paycheck and given to their union’s political action committee, or PAC.
