Tribe & Raskin support using the 14th Amendment to solve debt ceiling issue

Exactly right! @RepRaskin is spot on. There’s nothing optional about the 14th Amdt. “Invoking” the 14th isn’t even a thing. It’s not a “get out of jail free” card but a set of handcuffs. It must be obeyed. McCarthy should read it.

Rep. Jamie Raskin
@RepRaskin
The 14th Amdt provides that the “validity of the public debt…shall not be questioned.” This is not an “option” but a mandate. We can’t allow the MAGA fringe to crash the economy if we don’t cave into their demands to destroy critical social programs for vets, nutrition & health.

Puts the onus back on Republicans to challenge it in court and the default goes back to be 100% on them for the public.

How do you argue you've been damaged because bills are being paid?

They'll say he doesn't have the authority. But it will buy some time at least.

He says the president has a DUTY to continue paying the bills of the US. And the constitutionality of a "debt ceiling" is dubious to a good many scholars. Not sure the Roberts-Thomas-Alito clique will go along with that; 'tis the question.

so much sense to me. The Bills must be paid without destroying Social programs that actually help people. The Billionaires don't need more tax breaks. That's why we're in so much debt NOW.

So the magats do want to "destroy programs for Vets", too. Gops said Pres Biden was lying when he said that.

They love that metaphor, well the debt ceiling is to pay the bills that Congress ran up with their “purse strings“. And Kevin has yet to submit an actual budget

The 1997 platinum coinage act and the 1974 Budget act also back up any actions Joe does to avoid default. Isn't the 1917 law that this is about basically meaningless as most of it's provisions are now moot?
