Texas Tribune was just on NPR about Uvalde

They are about to release (I think) reports on information never before made public. Body cam and investigation interviews etc.

The top points were this:
The police were there in 3 minutes. The shooter wasn’t killed for another 74 minutes.
The delay was because of the weapon “the firepower” as the former police chief said in an interview that was aired. They knew from the casings and the holes in the walls that the shooter had an AR-15 type gun. Their body armor is only rated to stop handguns.

18 of the 21 who died were killed in the first 3 minutes. Before the police got there. The shooter fired over 100 rounds in 3 minutes.

Not meant by me or by the Tribune reporter as excuses.

Heavily armed, numerous cops are hesitant to confront a lone gunman because he has a military grade firearm that their body armor isn't good enough to defend against. But schoolchildren can face that down and get blown to pieces, such that when all the carnage is over at last, the authorities use their best judgment in deciding what body parts go with which child.

Meanwhile, county sheriffs and other police big-shots are 100% against any regulation of firearms because reasons. And there's nothing the citizens of our country can do about it, because we apparently have signed a murder-suicide pact with the firearms industry and its lobbyists.

They gain much voter support. It's a no-brainer. It's been done before from 1994-2004.

There is no upside to it, unless you’re an authoritarian thug with a badge.
