yes i know amazon and walmart are evil. but target needs to pay a price for their cowardly decision on pride merchandise. they are a billion dollar corporation and when you get down to it dollars are all that matters . they decided that caving to right wing extremists is a good business move. they need to pay a heavy price for their cowardliness.
If you cant bring yourself to shop either of those places find something else but anywhere but target

(129,762 posts)The problem wasn't just that the wingnuts were boycotting Target; it's also that their employees were being harassed and threatened and merchandise was being damaged. Their position is that they had an obligation to protect their employees and shoppers from aggressive, threatening and violent behavior. This editorial addresses the dilemma, for what it's worth:
The situation's ongoing risk to shoppers and Target staff is both blindingly obvious and unacceptable. Erring on the side of caution, as Target is doing, could prevent a tragedy. That reality should inform perspectives on Target's decision. It's the people who trashed the product displays or making threats who deserve condemnation. The retailer is taking responsible steps to fulfill its most important obligation to those on store premises: their personal safety...
Target clearly sees Pride merchandise as a business opportunity. It should be free to offer these products without fear of harm to employees or customers. That it had to take protective measures is a disheartening reflection on multiple levels on the age in which we live.

they were forced to do this because of terrorist threats. i can't blame them for that. Those responsible should be hunted down and jailed.

(19,056 posts)Being put in this position is a lose/lose situation for Target. Since many of these wackos are armed and only barely in control of their lizard brains, erring on the side of caution seems to be a responsible approach.

(3,931 posts)as for the argument that those whackos might be armed thats an excuse

(5,061 posts)I've worked retail before, 99% of the people that make threats leave right after making the threat. Then you and the store have to worry about them coming back with an AR-15
Most are just terrorizing (they know what they are doing, they threaten, they leave, they make you worry. the terrorizing is the point for most), but some follow through

I am a strong ally but not gonna hate on Target for this decision.

(58,785 posts)pro-LGBTQ+ merchandise in the first place. Then took them away, back to baseline.
I haven't been in Target for a while, but I've noticed questionable merchandise in other supposed family department stores that I felt was over the line. LGBtQ+ colored flowers and unicorns on children's clothing and backpacks fine, overtly sexual motifs no.
I once had to explain to my DIL what the Gadsden flag snake symbolized to many after she grabbed a tshirt featuring it in a Dillard's for our grandson. She thought he'd like the tough-looking snake. She didn't know, assumed it was inoffensive because it was being sold in Dillards in the children's department. She determined later that it wouldn't be allowed at school.

(129,762 posts)Say you're the owner of a store that sells LGBTQ-friendly merchandise, and one day some lunatic comes in and busts up a display, punches an employee, and tells the manager if they don't stop selling this stuff that his people will come in and shoot everybody in the store and set the place on fire. You tell the guy to fuck off, then call the cops and they take the guy away. The next day his pal comes in, shoots everybody, and sets the place on fire. You see the dilemma? And the liability?
moonshinegnomie
(3,931 posts)i guess its time for the lgbtq community to start disrupting evangelical church services and threatening attendees. the chirch would then have a responsibility to stop pressing an anti gay agenda
Ocelot II
(129,762 posts)Would you tell your front-line employees to just deal with it; putting up with threats and harassment are part of their job? Guy threatens to shoot up the store; you ignore the threat and he does it. You explain, "Yeah, he did say he was going to kill everybody in the store, but we didn't want to give in to threats." Hope you've got a good lawyer, a lot of insurance, and no conscience.

Do you think Target has armed guards to keep the terrorist on site until the cops show up?

(129,762 posts)Some of these wackos carry guns. I get that we don't want them to cave in to the demands of bigots, but low-wage front-line employees, some just teenagers, are having to deal with hostile assholes who are damaging merchandise and threatening them with harm. Boycotting Target is not the answer.

(2,687 posts)Target, Chic Filet, that arts and craft store, etal have no idea what's going on if they're not told. There is a Target that I will stop at on my way home tomorrow. I have 5 minutes to spare so I will go to the customer service desk and ask for the manager. I will tell him or her that allowing the people that threaten your workers, damage merchandise, or disrupt your business will only continue to do that with tacit approval. I will tell him/her that there are many online who don't say what I'm saying, instead they talk of boycots or shopping elsewhere. It is up to Target to announce that anyone breaking the law in their store will be arrested. I know that as the manager of a single store you do not make corporate decisions, but you are the eyes and ears of corporate and being able to tell this to the district manager is why you are in charge of this store.
If we don't tell them they will never figure it out.

(57,631 posts)It's a few blocks from my house. No corporation meets high standards, and we have to shop somewhere. Target at least pays decent wages. They made their decision based on the safety of their employees and customers. The solution is to arrest those making the threats. Endangering the lives of employees and putting them out of work does not solve the problem.
usedtobedemgurl
(1,947 posts)I would feel a lot safer with their decision. No one should be terrorized because they work at a certain chain. I am sure it was a tough situation. You never want to give in to terrorists. When our side does boycotts, we dont include terrorizing the employees of that chain. Considering how many unstable gun nuts there are, Target may have saved lives by pulling merchandise. It is imperative for companies to take a stand, but this demonstrates, to me, they have their heart in the right place. So many companies treat their employees like $hit. It is great their employees matter to them. Just my opinion.

(26,695 posts)would let them organize and have a say in their own protection. It could also use its expensive public-private partnership with the cops for security as well, instead of turning it on the communities it's located in.

(4,625 posts)can't or won't see them. We are all going to need to accept that more risk is part of our lives now IMO. I can see the stores dollars and sense decision but I can also see that if we always capitulate the problem worsens. The easy answers don't live here anymore.

(14,198 posts)So....
Mind you, if I got a little extra money, the long trip to the little corner store across from the Ronstadt bus station downtown ( Johnny Gibson's Downtown Market) is a plus.
They have the best bacon and sausage. And fresh vegetables. There dairy is not bad either. But one does have to pay for quantity.
And they serve, in my opinion, the best cup of coffee in town. It's cheap and oh so good. Only thing cheap in the store but the quality is up there with the all the stuff they sell.
It part convenience store, part grocery store.
There's been times I've gone there on a Sunday morning to buy a cup of coffee and a news paper to read while waiting for the bus back to the apartment. The busses are even hour on Sundays so it makes for a nice outing once in a while when I feel up to it.
I haven't been there for a while though. Thinking about it, maybe I'll try this Sunday. Put Sonny's vest and shoes on him and take a trip.
If you're in the area and see a woman woman in a wheelchair with a Chihuahua in a service vest.....
I made it!

(11,767 posts)They made a smart move. It's too bad it's being framed as them being cowardly. The reality is they were brave to do it. They care about their employees. We need to make it clear that it was domestic terrorism that caused this move and nothing else.

(22,361 posts)All the pride merchandise is available and on display right up front. Target also is inclusive in selecting models for their advertising, plus sized, multi-cultural, disabled, etc. They pay their employees better and are more concerned for their safety.
But I'll ignore all of that and shop Walmart...
