OH: Don't let Republican lawmakers torch democracy in August special election:
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Republican-driven atrocities are heading our way. There are fires flaring and we need firefighters. Get your buckets of water and get ready, people, or a piece of our democracy is going up in flames.
The Republicans’ illegal August 8 election says what we’ve done as Ohio voters for more than a century is wrong. Silly us for thinking a simple majority can make a decision on our constitutional amendments.
here’s only one issue on the expensive $20 million summer ballot, and it wants to make it harder for us, the people, to change the Ohio Constitution – in two ways.
Mind you, we already have the constitutionally protected right to gather signatures and, by petition, put our citizen-initiated proposed amendments to statewide voters. The Republicans want to make getting the signatures more difficult, thereby scorching our democratic process currently provided to us by our Ohio constitution.
They also want to make it harder to pass ANY and all amendments, no matter who brings them to a vote. Right now, all ballot items are decided by a simple majority -- 50% plus one. Our Republican legislators want to require a supermajority (60% of the vote) to pass amendments. Bad idea.
