"Great night for Joe Biden, great night for the White House even though I think their messaging has been kind of tentative the past few weeks" the Lincoln Project founder began. "I think though we are now going to start the Kevin McCarthy death-clock. He has certainly got a very angry part of his caucus tonight who probably burning up his phone no matter how good it is for the country not to default.""It's not going to please the chaos caucus in the GOP," he added.

(86,824 posts)Demanded to go with and was explicitly told she could not by the WH. With her being an insurrectionist and all, she shouldn't be allowed in the building. Maybe that was part of the holdup.
Temper tantrums and reports of them are sure to follow.

(9,909 posts)1. The REAL negotiations begin between Charlie McCarthy and the Democrats. (Oh, I mean Kevin?)
2. He loses his job regardless.
3. Hakeem Jeffries becomes Speaker of the House.
4. Rightful wins over spiteful.
The flea-dom caucus wants nothing less than the undoing of all Biden and Harris have accomplished and the destruction of the economy so that a Führer could take over: "I, alone can fix it." style. (IMO)

(14,178 posts)I'm more unfamiliar with the American system, being Canadian, but I thought Democrats were the official governing party, with the Presidency and the Senate.
So why do these MAGAts think they can extort concessions under threat of crashing the economy? I guess because they can...is the answer.
Just seems wild. In most democracies, the ruling party can be criticized, and pressured by the opposition, and the media can get involved. Sometimes the ruling party will then edit their budget under that pressure. Or if its a minority government, they may need one other party (we have three main parties and other smaller ones) to back them and give something to them for it.
But in the US it seems like one party gets elected and then the opposition, if they want to be that ruthless, can put themselves on almost equal footing in deciding what goes in or out. Under threat of ruining the economy....then blame the party in charge for the economy.....and use that to be elected themselves. So R's demanding out with people friendly more progressive policies, and in with their own. Like nixing Biden's plan to fund a concerted effort by the IRS to go after the wealthy tax cheats. Surprise surprise surprise.

(32,791 posts)Since 1980 when Reagan came in, everything changed. Now the Repukes expect to get it both ways every time. They expect to win every election, even when they lose. Every piece of legislation must have their approval or it won't fly, and that only happens when there's something in it for THEM. We're basically dealing with children here.

(5,444 posts)Kevin is trying hard to show some leadership style there.
But come on, after many decades of Repugs being the party of Oppositional Defiance, being anything else is proving very difficult indeed.
But yes, being too friendly will win Kev no friends amongst his peers.
