and youth aging out of foster care
While the budget agreement would raise the age for existing work requirements on able-bodied adults without children from 50 to 54, Biden was able to secure waivers for veterans and the homeless.
The deal carves out *new* exemptions for adults who would no longer be subject to ABAWD work requirements: veterans, youth aging out of foster care, individuals who are homeless.

(733 posts)If one is able-bodied yet between jobs , are they then only eligible after they find another job, which would then disqualify them because of their new income level? Its like a Catch-22.
This is another one of societys safety nets being pulled out from under the poor.

As blowing off SNAP benefits to others as "not much" of course is.
Out of curiosity, we just checked Georgia's benefit, and my husband and I spend less per month at the market than the average SNAP benefit in GA for two people. We're surprised. We can buy whatever we feel we can afford (beef's become an infrequent treat), and I assumed our free choices would definitely push us over. I do most but not all shopping at Walmart for significant savings overall, though. And of course, we're not feeding a fireman his 6000 calories a day.
As for the deal, we're using our free time to feel satisfied with what those responsible and caring enough to vote for have accomplished.

Yet repukes never ask corporate America to do anything for the billions we give them in corporate welfare.

The "purity" types in the Freedom Caucus and other RW anti-establishment chaos agents oppose to their own drum also. Their caucus is in near chaos because there are more of them there, enough who'd rather defeat all than agree to what a big majority could achieve against us.
Really, we're doing damned good, considering the playing field. Thanks to our voters.

(4,002 posts)Honestly I'm amazed they were able to lock in the exemptions beyond Veterans. Repukes are all about the military so I can understand that one. The homeless, foster youth aging out and the others. That's a win.

(4,168 posts)But my 34-year-old friend has one of those invisible disabilities and zero income, very little in savings left from COVID payments.
She cannot work because of her health and is having trouble getting her application for SSI approved. With no income and transportation, it's hard to get the medical tests that would be needed to prove a disability.
She isn't homeless, because her parents allow her to live with them.
I worry about her. She gets SNAP benefits now. But will she be expected to work? She has dizziness and headaches from a cerebrospinal injury that causes CSF fluid to leak between her brain cavity and sinuses. Plus she has other health issues.
lapucelle
