Former President Donald Trump vowed Tuesday to issue an executive order blocking children of undocumented immigrants from automatically becoming U.S. citizens if elected to a second term in 2024, his latest campaign pledge as he attacks President Joe Biden’s immigration policies—though many experts have questioned whether the idea is legal.

Trump took aim at the country’s long-standing “birthright citizenship” policy, which grants citizenship to virtually all children born in the U.S. regardless of their parents’ immigration status, a practice enacted due to the post-Civil War 14th Amendment, which promises “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof” are U.S. citizens.

Trump blasted the policy and promised to end it on his first day in office in a post on his social media platform Truth Social, calling it a “reward for breaking the laws of the United States,” and “obviously a magnet helping draw a flood of illegals across our borders” (Trump had previously said while in office he was considering ending birthright citizenship).
