to Kevin McCarthy's brilliant idea to establish a commission to find ways to cut Medicare and Social Security. Hats and pants off to you Sir. Say it loud and proud every day until Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

(61,033 posts)Why in the world would he think that republican voters, many older and on Medicare and Social Security, would want them cut?
The man is just not that smart.

(5,058 posts)A lot of them ended up being the mythical Obama to TFG voters. We are all well educated, hold advanced degrees, and first generation immigrants. I hated it when I saw Fox News on TV when we gather. We usually gather at one of the person's house. But since it's his house, it's his choice of which channel to watch so I keep my mouth shut. A lot of them are religious too.
I simply don't understand their draw to TFG. I understand the populous rhetoric but it's clear TFG meant none of it. He aligned himself with the right wing nutjobs because the "normal" republicans all deserted him. It's kind of funny. I was an "independent" back in 2015 and I was ready to really give both sides a good chance. It was my first election. After seeing a few of TFG and the joke of a debate that the republicans put out, I am now a democrat for a good 10-20 years if not for the rest of my life.

(15,424 posts)that we were were a superficial generation.
Kind of a counter reaction to a good portion of the prior generations that had a good number of "hippy" antiwar, save the planet and social justice in their youth. Didn't see much of that out of us.
Pretty much had stoners/shop kids, preps and the out kids.
Movies were those rosy / popish things like pretty in pink, Jon Hughes kind of stuff, we saw the gordon gecko greed is good stuff going on, Miami Vice. Music was heavy pop, clothing was just cringe worthy.
Just little substance.
This was also the time when the republican party and evangelicals were starting into their unholy alliance. We were not a religious generation at all really, just went cause our parents went, but were the first generation to get that political indoctrination through the churches.

(5,058 posts)I went to church when I was in my teenage years in another country. I continued going for a few years when I immigrated to the US. I stopped going after a few years because something just seemed off with churches in the US (maybe it was just the one I went to, but it seems more systematic with what's happening in recent years).
When I went to church in another country, it was not political. It's not tied to a political ideology and the main purpose was to spread love and care to people around you. It was a place to meet and have fun with other people. The church I went to was an accepting place. I remember people from all walks of live. One clearly had mental illness, but none of us cared or minded. We didn't talk about it and we treat the person the same as everyone else. One was clearly gay. But once again, no one cared or said anything.
When I went to church in the US, it was like an exclusive club kind of thing. They do welcome people from all walks of live but they are trying to mold people to follow whatever they preach. I felt excluded because I wasn't fitting the mold exactly. Something was just off and I stopped going after a few years. It took me years to realize what the problem I had with it.

(15,424 posts)What non church related religious exposure I had a youth was just like yours.
The good stuff.
But, most actual churches I have attended or been around that are mostly white are the uptight club thing you note.
On the other hand, my black friends who are church going and religious, seem the most genuinely christian people I know.

(22,971 posts)that's all they care about. Another issue that is pissing off Americans is abortion. Then they are fucking with education, books, health care, inflation, besides whatever that "woke and crt" means. They are messing with rights period, gerrymandering, and taken over blue counties and cities.
It's like Communism.

(6,829 posts)Sure, there are a lot of suckers in the country who would rather see a neighborhood burn than allow a book with a new idea into tha neighborhood's library. But when Big Gubbmnt starts mucking around with THEIR money, the luster over conservatism fades quickly when their Sealions just can't get the traction they want.
All it takes is a crack and the dam is that much weaker. McCarthy is doing his damned best to create that crack for fun and profit.

(1,314 posts)MOVING SPECIAL IRS FUNDING
Biden and Democrats secured $80 billion for a decade in new funding to help the Internal Revenue Service enforce the tax code for wealthy Americans in last year's Inflation Reduction Act, a move the administration said would yield $200 billion in additional revenue over the next 10 years.
The IRS earmarked the money for hiring thousands of new agents, and the extra tax revenue they generated was expected to offset a slew of climate-friendly tax credits.
The new legislation and subsequent appropriations would shift $10 billion in each of calendar years 2024 and 2025 in funding away the Internal Revenue Service. But administration officials believe the IRS can make do in the near term since it was funded over a 10-year period.
