Inside the Meltdown at CNN (after the ill-advised Trump Town Hall)

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2023/06/cnn-ratings-chris-licht-trump/674255/

When he took the helm of CNN, in May 2022, Licht had promised a reset with Republican voters—and with their leader. He had swaggered into the job, telling his employees that the network had lost its way under former President Jeff Zucker; that their hostile approach to Trump had alienated a broader viewership that craved sober, fact-driven coverage. These assertions thrust Licht into a two-front war: fighting to win back Republicans who had written off the network, while also fighting to win over his own journalists, many of whom believed their new boss was scapegoating them to appease his new boss, David Zaslav, who’d hired Licht with a decree to move CNN toward the ideological center.

One year into the job, Licht was losing both battles. Ratings, in decline since Trump left office, had dropped to new lows. Employee morale was even worse. A feeling of dread saturated the company. Licht had accepted the position with ambitions to rehabilitate the entire news industry, telling his peers that Trump had broken the mainstream media and that his goal was to do nothing less than “save journalism.” But Licht had lost the confidence of his own newsroom. Because of this, he had come to view the prime-time event with Trump as the moment that would vindicate his pursuit of Republican viewers while proving to his employees that he possessed a revolutionary vision for their network and the broader news media.

Trump had other ideas.

For 70 minutes in Manchester, the former president overpowered CNN’s moderator, Kaitlan Collins, with a continuous blast of distortion, hyperbole, and lies. The audience of Trump devotees delighted in his aggression toward Collins, cheering him on so loudly and so purposefully that what began as a journalistic forum devolved into a WWE match before the first voter asked a question. Vince McMahon himself could not have written a juicier script: Trump was the heroic brawler—loathed by the establishment, loved by the masses—trying to reclaim a title wrongly taken from him, while Collins, standing in for the villainous elites who dared to question the protagonist’s virtue, was cast as the heel. “She’s not very nice,” Trump told the studio audience, pointing toward Collins while she stood just offstage during the first commercial break.

. . .

“Does CNN count that as an in-kind campaign donation?” the longtime broadcaster Dan Rather tweeted.

Rather’s comment was gentle compared with the torrent of criticism aimed at CNN. “Ready to call it: This was a terrible idea,” the conservative writer Ramesh Ponnuru tweeted, just nine minutes into the event. “CNN should be ashamed of themselves,” tweeted Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. “This is an absolute joke,” tweeted former Republican Representative Adam Kinzinger. “Chris Licht is rapidly becoming the Elon Musk of CNN,” tweeted The Bulwark’s Charlie Sykes.

When Licht found me in the lobby, commenting on how not boring the night had been, it wasn’t clear how much of the blowback he’d already seen. What was clear was that Licht knew this was bad—very, very bad. Republicans were angry at CNN. Democrats were angry at CNN. Journalists were angry at CNN. The only one who wasn’t angry, it seemed, was Trump, most likely because he’d succeeded in disgracing the network on its own airwaves. . . .

Drops the bone it does have to go after the image of one. So CNN lost sane viewers in an attempt to gain nutjobs. Brilliant.

But, in my opinion, it's not so much about ratings (and certainly isn't about journalism, which anchors like Keilar practiced well during dump's time in office) but more about creating a media narative that includes the nutjobs who support the desires of oligarchs like billionaire and prime owner Malone.

Facts are not kind to Trump. Republicans crave slanted innuendo, lies and conspiracy theories. There is nothing that can be properly called "journalism" that will win over Republican viewers. There is no "ideological center" between truth and propaganda.

I suspect Chris Licht already knows this, and is not as deluded or naive as his bullshit talk about a noble mission would suggest.

Facts are never going to make Rs look good. Journalism must put forth & explain that particular fact. The RWNJs won't accept the logic behind that any more than they accept anything the don't like to hear.

But there are loads of "independents" who can be persuaded by facts, logic, and truth. Unfortunately, extreme Rs are bombarding them with partisan BS far more often than level-headed sources are offering them sound, ressoned counterpoint.

They’re not right wing enough to match Fox or Newsmax, but they’re too soft on Republicans to challenge MSNBC so they’re stuck in nowhere land. I haven’t bothered even reading anything on CNN’s website in ages.

Perhaps the problem is that they believe that there’s a huge middle of people who do not align with either Democrats or Republicans and that no media is reaching these people. There may be a middle, but I don’t think it’s very large. We are so divided now that most people have aligned with one party or the other, even though they may still be registered as Independents.

A recent Reuters poll reported that 53% of Republicans believe that Trump won the 2020 election. The rest most likely know he didn’t win, but they liked his policies and his attacks on liberals so they’re fully behind him. That leaves very few in the middle.

They're trying to fight a battle that can't be won. They can't uphold any real journalistic standards AND appeal to Republican voters, because those things are mutually exclusive.

The country over all is tired of this. Politics is supposed to be governance preferably in the background providing stability for it citizenry and infrastructure for an economy, defense.... etc. People are tired of the 24/7 jerry springer drama show that DT & The GOPs freedom caucus and what really is a small demographic of their base's and its insanity from incompetent criminality has become. The last 23 yrs the GOP has given us one disaster after another (9/11, Katrina Response, 2 Wars, Economic Collapse, Torture, Pandemic, Attacking the Capital, DT, stealing National Secrets, 1 million plus Americans that died while the GOP with a straight face lied about a deadly pandemic calling it a hoax when 1000's were dying every day. We have had enough.

The GOP needs to finally be held accountable by the Dems. Garland should be ashamed of himself and Biden should know better. Obama did the same thing giving everyone in the Bush admin and Wall Street a pass for a war started on lies, torture and global financial collapse that cost trillions and we are living with the horrid consequences of that decision. Had accountability been applied the people now like DT, Greene, Gaetz, Gosar may have thought twice before doing what they did on Jan 6th.

It almost feels like the Dems do not want to change and enforce the law on the GOP because they think they have the upper hand with the GOP being so inept but in 23yrs now the Dems have not been able to make any head way or capitalize on the GOPs insanity to their advantage as the GOP would (remember Gary Hart?) instead they have allowed the GOP to become a minority majority that walks all over the Dems at will. I really dislike McConnell but it would be nice to have someone with the hardball acumen he has for the job.

The simple fix would be for a journalist....any journalist at any news org to just start reporting the unvarnished truth and stand fast behind it as Cronkite used to do. Shining an abundance of light on the true insanity politics has become because of the GOP and the candidates they have picked would find a wave of support like they have never seen before. We have seen small glimpses of this but the GOP w/ FOX has been effective at shutting this down because people cave or back off this needs to stop and the GOP needs to be met with the same dedication it has.

read almost the whole link. One point some of us made from the start, that LICHT was a product of SCARBOROUGH back before SCABS made his marital and ideological shift. What the writer doesn't say is what Keith has said, that back in SCABS' shop LICHT would go to the weak boss at MSNBC and threaten him on SCABS' behalf to cancel Lib guests on the other shows with the threat that SCABS would call in sick if not complied with.

Point specific to this article, that the writer has been interacting a LOT with LICHT all during this time and at least at some point with LICHT's *new mission direction*.

Saying again, very LOooong exposition - and without much unexpected INSIGHT.

If he had stayed in his lane and been an “entertainer”, a clown, a buffoon that would have been one thing. But to bring that sh*t show to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue was a lot too much. Some of us knew it before it happened that it would bring nothing good to the office and everything bad. He has damaged the office and the democracy we hold so dear.

We voted him out and he has fought tooth and nail to get back in office. My sense of it is he likes the power but most of all he views it as his get out of jail free card. So we need to hang tight, keep our heads focused on making sure Justice is done before the next election. With any luck at all (and the stars get aligned) he will be tried, convicted and behind bars by election 2024! 🤞

When they moved Lemon from one of the most prestigious time slots (primetime), solo hosting a show named after him, I knew that something was up.

But there was one or two people around here, that let's just say, tried raining on the parades of those that thought this.

From the article:

...

Given Licht’s down-the-middle mantra, people inside the network were mystified by his decision to hitch the success of the new morning show to CNN’s chief provocateur. Some believed that Licht had been ordered by Zaslav to remove Lemon from his 10 p.m. slot (Licht denied this). Others sensed that Licht, who had already gotten rid of other “off mission” staffers, including the media reporter Brian Stelter and the White House correspondent John Harwood, would have axed Lemon too, if not for his being one of the lone Black voices on a very white network.

Yeah. Turns out we were most likely right.

Fri Jun 2, 2023, 12:48 PM
Jun 2023
...

“This is not about you versus Chris,” Dornic continued. “I think his perspective is: Under a normal administration, those would have been 11s. But you had to recalibrate, because if you make the outrageous thing about women an 11, then what happens when he actually does something completely insane and undermines democracy?”

Per the article, Dornic is a CNN senior VP of communications and one of Licht's close "entourage." Here, he is essentially defending Licht's approach to covering Trump, which basically entails accepting from Trump what they would deem unacceptable from any other candidate or administration.

Once again, just confirming what many of us had already suspected.

And to answer this dipshit's question, if Trump does that, you make it a fucking 20 or 30 or 40. The answer isn't to accept the unacceptable while acting like a candidate using a personal email for government business -- WHICH EVERY FUCKING PERSON IN GOVERNMENT HAS DONE AT SOME POINT -- is one of the biggest scandals of all time. Now, obviously this happened before Licht's tenure there, but you can apply it to how this new CNN approaches any of the Biden administration's minor slip-ups that they try to make into something bigger because they don't grade Biden on a curve like THEY HAVE NOW ADMITTED THEY DO WITH TRUMP.

"Move" to the center?
By pandering to an increasingly rightward shifting radical minority?

What they should have done.
Is gone back to hard news.
Staked out a position of fact-based reporting and renewing actual investigative and on-site journalism.

It probably wouldn't have paid immediate benefits but I believe it would have positioned them for long term success.

The part of the article that particularly struck me was when it talked about how David Zaslav, Licht's boss, hired him "with a decree to move CNN toward the ideological center" coupled with this part:

...

David Zaslav cared more about other metrics. Success would be measured differently at CNN than it had been in the past. “This is a reputational asset for the company. It is not a profit-growth driver,” Licht said.

I asked him to define “reputational asset” in the context of an enormous, publicly traded, for-profit corporation.

“CNN, for Warner Bros. Discovery, is a reputational asset,” he said, emphasizing the phrase. “My boss believes that a strong CNN is good for the world and important to the portfolio.”

Even if it’s not making nearly the money it once did?

“So I’m told,” he said.

This sentiment struck me as particularly guileless coming from a newsman. Whatever Zaslav’s worldview, steering CNN toward the center was a business decision...

Zaslav cared about other metrics, huh? Not profitability, huh? When the fuck have you ever heard a corporate type not been concerned about profitability first and foremost? Sure, they might say they care about other things, but their actions reveal what really motivates them, and it is almost always making the biggest profit possible, usually at the expense of everything else.

So, what were these other metrics hmm? Could they have been appeasing "John Malone, a right-wing billionaire who stood to become a major shareholder on the new Warner Bros. Discovery board, (who) said that CNN could learn a few things from the reporters at Fox News?" Could they have been driving CNN -- one of Trump's biggest and most successful antagonists during his administration -- into the ground? And if not fully killing it and burying it, issuing an edict from up above to reset with Republican voters and try to win them over, knowing the only way to even attempt to go about doing that is by kissing up to these fascist liars?

Fuck Licht's CNN even more than usual. I was a regular viewer, even more so than MSNBC really. But I stopped watching as much when all this news started to trickle out about them taking a more rightward shift and fully removed them from my TV which I can do that now with my subscription model -- not just removing their channel from showing up, but not paying for their channel anymore at all.

but Licht is delusional if he thinks a sane person can have a rational conversation with people who think every Democrat is a pedophile, want to kill gay and transgender people, love their guns more than their children, and so on and so forth.
