NextEra Energy, one company behind the Mountain Valley pipeline, is a major contributor to Manchin and Schumer. In the 2022 cycle, the company’s employees and political action committees gave $60,000 to Manchin and a stunning $302,000 to Schumer, according to data from the Center for Responsive Politics.

1. Senator Tim Kaine was very angry, yet eloquent on this & I share his anger at the precedence set

that this one $$$ company can bypass nearly all the regulations and requirements--when they hit a few snags-- by paying off Congress to pass something like this. Kaine's concern over those who would lose their property to eminent domain would now have no recourse. Of course, Manchin never cares about this, and many of the VA landowners, like those in WVA were generational owners of modest properties-- not wealthy people who could just go buy/build elsewhere. And now, they will likely have zero recourse.

While I have to agree that the bill HAD to be passed to avoid default and that there was no time for amendments, I am just sick over this and several other inclusions in the bill.

I guess there is little that can be done about the MVP unless Mother Nature or other issues result in a sufficient delay that a future Dem majority could override this with new legislation--or someone might successfully file a court challenge. But, it is sickening. I've never said much about Manchin, but he's got some Karma coming to him-- perfunctory Democrat that he is or no.

10. And we Democrats are not the "Pipeline Party."

But we are the responsible party that gets things done, which, in this case, meant promising Manchin to act on this particular pipeline in exchange for his vote last year to pass the most expansive climate change in our nation's history. So, would you have preferred that legislation not pass instead?

Once again, being in the responsible party means making tough choices. The choice made in this situation: securing the largest federal clean energy investment in U.S history in exchange for removing some legal hurdles for one particular pipeline. I'd say it's worth it, because in reality, a purist approach given the nature of our government is the quickest way to get absolutely nothing done.

Furthermore, the agreement can still be challenged in court, except now the jurisdiction has been moved to U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, which currently looks to be controlled by Democratic-appointed judges (10-7).

So, yeah. You might have not heard the last of the issue.

Those that criticize Biden making deals like this might want to look into the details more often and maybe give him more credit than they do. And, once again, realize that an all-or-nothing approach in our current government is a quick way to end up having served a decades-long career without accomplishing anything of significance other than "sticking to your principles" that entire time.

Once again, it's not called perfection -- it's called progress.
