The guy is 77 years old. Convicting Trump of the classified documents crimes is 30 - 40 years in prison.
Why bother with the harder to prove J6 crimes? Convict Eastman, Clark, fake electors, Meadows, Rudy etc. for those.
Just a thought.

Any one of those could send him away for long enough.
But I think we should write him up for J6 as well. Simply because we need a deterrent for the next wanna-be dictator.

(I originally wrote "a quick conviction" but that train left the station a long time ago.)

if trump is reported to die in prison i would suspect an elaborate escapo much like ken lay or epstein.

(2,273 posts)Every rethuglican running for president will pardon him on federal charges, even if it is an espionage conviction.
Need state prison time to prevent one pardon getting him out of jail.

Except for one thing: 7 million more Americans will turn out to vote for president again. And again.

Im far from a legal expert, so Im kinda reliant on those who, yunno, actually work on those cases. Unless theyre found to be bad actors - proven, mind you, not mere speculation - then I say leave them to their jobs and stop worrying about every fucking thing over which I have zero control.

Honestly, I don't know how sentencing would be deflected in this way, but it seems likely, given the pushback that will ensue regardless. The fact that we have a Russian actor in the crosshairs, something I think the DOJ is well aware of but which probably will have to be kept under wraps on an official basis, further complicates the equation.
For me, we have one Constitution and one set of laws which should be applied equally to all citizens, regardless of whether they won a national popularity contest or not. As far as I know, there is no amendment that would topple that thinking.

My guess, if DOJ succeeds in getting DC as a venue, Trump would be sentenced for 5-10 years, unless he is convicted of sharing/selling docs to a foreign country.
5-10 years is pretty close to a life sentence for Trump, who would probably be 78-80 by the time he reports to prison.
And, of course there are other charges, especially the GA and NY charges, that he would likely serve before/after the federal charges.

This is not a good look for the Biden administration, nor for a country that claims to abide by the rule of law. If some people aren't accountable to the law, why bother?
