I wrote the following to them:
I am hereby officially withdrawing from the 2024 race for the presidency of the United States. While I realize that this may come as a shock to some, I have decided that my family and my day job come first. Plus, there are SO many Republicans running around loose in Washington these days, with little to no adult supervision, I just don't feel that there is a safe environment in which to carry out the official duties attached to the position.
Not only that, I do not feel that I could do an effective job AND take the time to cook the occasional Lobster/Scallop/Shrimp curry dish that my family has come to expect of me every year in Cape Cod. I will miss the chance to do some constructive diplomatic work (I speak German, French, Spanish, Russian, Italian, Dutch, Swedish and Catalan), but Anthony Blinken seems to be doing such a good job, he seems to have completely overlooked my absence in the meantime. He certainly hasn't mentioned it to my knowledge, anyway.
You may cite me as the first withdrawal you have noted from the non-public-office-holding ranks.
Best regards from Dallas and Düsseldorf,

(15,170 posts)used to fly in/out of DFW. Kidding, of course. I tried to avoid that area (the southern US). But AZ/NM are nice.
When the repugs get control again, I'm sure they have a lot of talented foreign speakers (in tongues), and chefs that can cook a bugger better than anyone.
Have you looked at one of those swank "Honorary Consul" positions? You might be a good fit.

(2,793 posts)Go west a few dozen miles or so to Fall River or New Bedford and pick up some Portuguese chourico-you won't be sorry
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chorizo
"In the heavily Portuguese counties in the US states of Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts, chouriço is often served with little neck clams and white beans. Chouriço sandwiches on grinder rolls, with sautéed green peppers and onions, are commonly available at local delis and convenience stores. Stuffed quahogs (also known as stuffies), a Rhode Island specialty, usually include chouriço"

(54,268 posts)A little over 19 years ago, I had a serious cardiac near-miss (as in "you are the luckiest guy in Europe today!" ), and I was told never ever again to eat anything that walked on four legs (not that Trump was ever in any danger of being eaten by me). I was just down in Portugal about 2 weeks ago, and had no chouriço then. I think I'll manage to stay away on the Cape, too.
