Neighbor Who Was Angry About Kids Playing Killed Their Mom, Florida woman has not been arrested

Neighbor Who Was Angry About Kids Playing Killed Their Mom
Florida woman has not been arrested as investigation continues

A Florida mother was fatally shot through a door outside a neighbor's home after what officials characterized on Monday as a 2 1/2-year feud over playing children, the AP reports. Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said at a news conference Monday that deputies responding to a trespassing call at an Ocala home on Friday night found Ajike Owens suffering from gunshot wounds. The 35-year-old mother of four was taken to a nearby hospital, where she died.

Since January 2021, Woods said, deputies have responded at least a half-dozen times in connection with the feuding between Owens and the woman who eventually shot her. The sheriff's office hasn't arrested or identified the shooter, though calls are mounting for an arrest to be made.

Woods said detectives are working with the State Attorney's Office, and they must investigate possible self-defense claims before they can move forward with any possible criminal charges. The sheriff pointed out that because of Florida's “stand your ground” law, he can't legally make an arrest unless he can prove the shooter did not act in self-defense.

Before the shooting, Owens' children had been playing in a field near the shooter's apartment complex, officials said. At some point, the woman yelled at the children and threw a pair of skates, which hit one of the children, Woods said. When Owens later confronted the woman at her apartment, an argument ensued, and the woman shot Owens through the front door, investigators said.

People keep saying these things without wondering what people in Floridian might think of them. Seriously, you wouldn't want people from Florida coming to your state with that attitude.

Tourism is not exactly FL's only industry or where most people work. To Floridians it's what makes them avoid certain of their beaches in the winter, actually wherever tourists tend to gather almost always.

Aerospace, clean energy, biotech, international trade and logistics for just a few are booming. The workforce is skilled and comes from across the nation and around the planet for good jobs and pay, and the economy's doing very well.

Just other facet of the whole to consider. Oh, here's another one: FL's VERY diverse, racially, ethnically and culturally -- it'd be quite a shock for the vast hoards of racists some here like to imagine are flooding in. It is something of a surprise, though, to visitors from white states and provinces who aren't used to what America's diversity actually looks like.

Have a nice one.

that happens to be exactly what various conservatives in FL (and everywhere else but CA) always tell me about California when the subject's come up. They have "absolutely no desire to travel there." Often followed up with they visited long ago and couldn't stand it, know people who lived there and hated it, knew people from California they hated, etc.

We all have the right to pursue our happiness, and sometimes they need to be separate happinesses.

grounds to be murdered?

And when you shoot through the door, well, you're not really defending yourself.

The door is protecting you, even if unlocked. You have the ability and time to lock it. And if the person on the other side of the door is not armed, how much danger are you in? Not defending against lethal force, presumably. Assume it's a screen door? A glass door? Don't see how you argue through a wood or steel door.

Americans need instructional videos on de-escalation and civics. Neighborliness. They would have done this in the 1950s.

Then again, when that 7year old comes looking for her lost kitten, they'll get out the arsenal.

Between the shit with DeSantis and their fucked up laws, it’s really a mess down there. And Disney is going to cause a world of hurt to DeSantis, and Florida. I’ve never liked Florida, but I hate to see the people going through this.

I believe this story and video were the original source for Newser's post. The mother who died was Ajike "AJ" Owens and she was black. At least 2 of her children saw her getting shot, so the police do have witnesses.

The children of the victim, identified as Ajike “AJ” Owens, were playing in a field near an apartment complex in Ocala when, attorney Ben Crump said, an unidentified white woman, 58, “began yelling at them to get off her land and calling them racial slurs.”

According to Crump’s statement, after the woman yelled slurs at Owens’ children, they accidentally left an iPad behind, which the woman took.

When one of Owens’ children went to retrieve it, she threw it, hitting the boy and cracking the screen. Owens walked across the street to speak to her neighbor after she learned what happened, Crump said.

“She knocked on the door, and at that point, the woman allegedly shot through the door, hitting AJ, who later died from her injuries,” Crump said.

How did she know she was being threatened if the door was closed? If this happened as described, it is murder plain and simple.

I'd like to see the police complaint history too. I'm wondering if this shooter was the instigator in the previous incidents.

There are people out there who would shoot you dead over the smallest thing. We've had a couple shooting over road rage here recently. You never know who you are dealing with and what they are capable of.
