Stand back and stand by and let the system work.
Neither Party is in a comfortable position.
The Democrats would be threatened with violence and retribution if the former president was convicted and incarcerated. The Republicans would be left with the unpalatable position of defending crimes against our nation.
Our nation has been put in a position where we have no choice but to follow the rule of law, as the eyes of the world, and Americans themselves, are looking at whether America will remain the leader of democracy in the world.
If Donald Trump is convicted by a jury of his peers, then he should go to jail. There would be no more appeals, no more double scoops of ice cream, and no more pardons.
The Republicans could take a position to defend the criminal all the way? They could argue that the shit on the bottom of their shoes was nothing more than fresh-mowed hay. But they would be defending an indefensible position.
It would be best if both Parties let the system work. Let our democracy work. Both Parties, and our country, would be better off if they simply washed their hands of this despicable criminal and try to move forward.
There is no future in defending Donald Trump.

(19,066 posts)They want to be rid of Trump, but they know Trump is not done with them no matter what happens in the courts.
If they cut Trump loose, he's going to take his voters with him. He's going to have to be convinced to bow out and then endorse DeSantis enthusiastically or they will get blown out in 2024. I have no idea how they'll accomplish this.
There are no easy answers, and it's very possible that the Republican Party just rides with Trump no matter what happens. I could see him running while having trials going on and then I could see a literal act of Congress to excuse him from serving time if he wins in 2024 until after 2028.
One thing, Trump and his lawyers are absolute experts at delay tactics, it's very possible they find ways to delay until after the 2024 election, even with the New York case currently scheduled to start in early 2024.

(5,443 posts)that does double if Trump somehow won-- he would surely pardon himself. The justification would be the one Gerald Ford used. Now the state charges are another thing: NY, maybe Georgia?
