The first witness on the stand was one of Mastersons alleged victims, Jane Doe 3, who had been in a relationship with Masterson between 1996 and 2002.
Deputy DA Reinhold Mueller asked her how she was feeling.
Not great, she said.
When Mueller asked what might be causing her concern about testifying, she said, Im scared.
What are you scared of? he pressed.
A lot of people in this room. And Scientology, she replied.

(26,546 posts)Scientology. They, along with others associated with the show, were threatened and harassed by Leahs detractors. It got to the point where production team members had to employ decoy vehicles to avoid their harassers and keep secret the filming locations.

(50,326 posts)I knew about Scientology enough to see it as cultish but it is more in line with the mafia with their tactics of threats, harassment, intimidation, etc.
Kudos to your daughter and son-in-law for sticking with it through the threats, etc.

(7,087 posts)That series was very good -- so eye opening.
I love Leah Remini. She always struck me as being so real, funny, down-to-earth, and no-bullshit. No wonder she was able to see through the cult's nonsense, even though she was indoctrinated as a child.

(19,060 posts)It's like any other religion, sex scandals won't stop it.
And it always cracks me up when people post about the ridiculousness of their dogma that they probably learned from South Park. Their story of cosmic aliens from a long way away who entrapped souls in volcanos who now inhabit people after those volcanos erupted and are the cause of human kind's problems. Is that really much more ridculous than a Cosmic Jewish Zombie, who was his own father, and died for our sins because a talking snake tricked a rib lady into eating some bad fruit?
Scientology is not much different than other religions, they all try to keepo their followers in line and paying dues.

(4,243 posts)members from reporting crimes against other members (especially Masterson types) to law enforcement. They are not subject to "wog" law. Scientology ensnares it's members in so much mind fucking shit it's difficult to untangle - like a cult does. Disobeying the rules means a lot of crap comes your way: disconnection from your family, fair game, harassments, exposure of your innermost confessions they've collected, declaring you a suppressive person. It's the Jeffrey Epstein of "religions". AND on top of it all is Scientology is tax exempt!!!! Go figure.

(19,060 posts)Mormonism, Catholicism, etc.
The sex scandal in the Catholic Church contained every element you talk about. People who go against the Mormon Church in Utah face the exact same type of retribution. All sorts of Evangelical churches that do the same things. Sounds like Scientology is just following the normal playbook.

(9,696 posts)Agreed, though scientology is even more extreme, paranoid and retributive in the way they treat their "members" ie hostages. The other churches cover everything with a veil of politeness and are easier to leave.

(4,243 posts)And was hung on the claim against the 3rd Jane Doe, w/the majority favoring guilty.
Testimony in the trial revealed how involved the cult was in protecting Masterson, since he and his victims were all Scientologists. They were all subject to Scientology law, not "Wog" law. Hell, the victims were "counseled" not to call it rape. It could not be reported to law enforcement and it cannot be called rape, or all hell would break lose on these young women, including losing their family.
The victims finally said - fuck it - we're going to the police - and that was a looong and hellacious ordeal, BUT the brave women DID IT!
The defense attorney's tried the old "this is like any other religion" analogy. It didn't work on the jury nor the Judge.
Next is the Civil Trial against Scientology by the Jane Does - I hope they bankrupt this cult, but I think they will offer a settlement to these victims before all the fair game cruelty is revealed.

(4,243 posts)enforcement. AND once again if you go against Scientology, all hell is expected to be unleashed against the person who disobeys. And the cult carefully collects and keeps the blackmail info on each member. It's a pretty fucked up organization. The only way they got tax exemption is that they had their members flood and overwhelm the IRS with lawsuits and harassment (to the organization and employees), until the director at that time gave in. - Scientology modus operandi.

(19,060 posts)How is that at all different from most US religions?

(19,060 posts)Catholicism literally threw people in jail or had them institutionalized who tried to expose sexual assault in the church they were so powerful. Mormons will basically turn your life upside down and make you an outcast in the community and from your families should you go against them publicly. Even the Amsih will shun people for the wrong behavior, which is basically banishment from the place you lived your whole life.
The Catholic Church had all sorts of written down rules against going to police, it's how they got away with covering up sexual abuse so successfully for hundreds of years, and it's ultimately a big reason why they've paid $billions in settlements so far.
Scientology just looked at what the more established religions have been doing for centuries and copied them. Most organized religions have a ton in common with cults. Scientology is awful in that respect, but so are other religions IMO.

(4,243 posts)I urge everyone to review this case and the testimony from the three Jane Does to see how involved and fucked up Scientology is. A Scientology book was accidently introduced into evidence by the defense that outlined how to deal with crimes by scientologists against other scientologists - how they cannot be reported to law enforcement, and need to be handled by Scientology. OR, once again, all hell will come down if the rule/law is broken. This book was entered into evidence. - PROOF.
Any proof about your statement about the Catholic church and their "all sorts of written down rules against going to police"?
