IBM plans to replace 7,800 jobs with AI over time, pauses hiring certain positions

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/05/ibm-pauses-hiring-around-7800-roles-that-could-be-replaced-by-ai/

"IBM Chief Executive Officer Arvind Krishna has revealed plans to pause hiring for about 7,800 positions that could be replaced by artificial intelligence systems over time, according to a Bloomberg news report published Monday.

Krishna said that hiring in back-office functions like human resources will be suspended or slowed, affecting roughly 26,000 non-customer-facing roles. That will include not replacing current roles vacated by attrition. "I could easily see 30 percent of that getting replaced by AI and automation over a five-year period," Bloomberg quoted Krisha as saying in an interview.

The announcement comes at a time when generative AI chatbots like ChatGPT have stirred anxiety about the future of human jobs. In March, Goldman Sachs released a report estimating that generative AI may "expose" 300 million jobs to automation, which means those roles might be reduced or replaced by AI systems."

2. Yes that would be a sweet irony. I fear the flood gates are about to open with AI eliminating jobs.

It does some things well, but still needs people to direct it.

Of course, if you are one of the displaced, the fact that another job was created doesn't help you.

This isn't really much different than outsourcing jobs to other countries. Hundreds of thousands of skilled workers were laid off.

This is a disruptive force, to be sure, but not really much different than other shifts.

Think about it. These units don't have technical skills, they largely just direct work to subordinets and then summarize results for those above them. They don't create either knowledge or strategic thought, though they believe they do.

Getting rid of management is the perfect use of ai.

6. Everyone is panicked over AI when the internet itself has been destroying jobs since the 90s.

Was walking about NYC, and the number of available retail stores for rent is astounding. Prime locations. Spacious. They're all sitting empty, and I cannot even think of a retail business that could be located there and be profitable.

Amazon has eaten much of the retail space.

while it is making new strides, the replacement of workers by tech is not a new thing.
The staff who became unemployed with previous advancements lost their jobs just as much as the folks at ibm will
