Rep. Katie Porter (CA-47)
As Orange Countys Congresswoman, I condemn yesterdays decisionmade during #PrideMonth, no lessby the Board of Supervisors to ban the Pride flag from being flown on county property. This month and every month, we should be lifting up our LGBTQ+ neighbors, not excluding them.
Santa Ana Council member Jesse Lopez
No government space will ever be neutral when occupied by bigots. Their policy choices will reflect their prejudice.
Supervisor Vince Sarmiento:
I am disappointed and disheartened about the new county policy ..which essentially restricts the County from flying Pride Flags on County buildings to show solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month. Pride Month symbolizes acceptance, hope and the continued struggle for equal justice.
Garden Grove Council member Kim Bernice Nguyen:
The Pride flag is not divisive, but a symbol of hope for a community that continues to endure, struggle and fight for basic recognition.
Buena Park Council member Connor Traut:
LGBTQ people continue to face injustice. Buena Park remains an avid champion for inclusivity and acceptance, recognizing that our efforts in this struggle must persist.
Sen. Catherine Blakespear, D-Encinitas (district covers South County):
The decision made by the Orange County Board of Supervisors today is aimed at the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month in a clear message of disrespect and intolerance, Blakespear said. As Mayor of Encinitas, I endorsed the flying of the Pride flag at City Hall because it is important for government to show it is inclusive and welcoming to all the people it serves. I am proud that Encinitas became the first city in San Diego County to do so.
As LGBTQ+ rights are under attack in many states, its more important than ever that our California communities embrace and publicly demonstrate support for the diversity of human experiences. Flying the rainbow flag in June is an important symbol of recognition and celebration that pushes back against normalizing intolerance, discrimination and violence toward members of the LGBTQ+ community.
