He likely needed to get out ahead of whatever story they were going to "leak." Doesn't in the least excuse what he did, but I think his hand was forced.

He may have been spooked, but he wasn't forced. And in the end, he was the guy who was responsible, not the retired guys who were pretending they had something juicy.
