https://www.palmerreport.com/analysis/confused-donald-trump-says-he-might-cut-plea-deal-in-doj-case-if-they-pay-him/50600/Donald Trump made his first public appearance after being criminally indicted by the DOJ, and as one might have predicted, it went rather stupidly. Trump oddly made a point of insisting hell stay in the 2024 race even though hes going on trial fairly soon for Espionage Act charges. This felt oddly defensive, given that no one anywhere was expecting him to just drop out immediately after being indicted. But then he said something truly strange.
Trump said he might be willing to cut a plea deal with the DOJ if they pay me some damages. No really, he said this. He really said this.
Maybe Trump was trying to be funny. But even if so, what he said still didnt make sense. He seems to think this is some kind of civil case, where only monetary damages are on the line. He thinks this is negotiable. He doesnt really appear to understand that hell be put on criminal trial, hell be found guilty, and hell go to federal prison, and the only negotiation he could potentially make is a slightly shorter prison sentence in exchange for pleading guilty.
Snip
But all of Trumps obvious confusion and lack of a human sense of humor aside, he may have given something away here. He seems to be talking about some kind of scenario where hes paid to go away, which makes you wonder if his endgame really is to get the RNC and its donors to pay him to exit the race rather than continuing to run once hes in prison. Well see.

(26,081 posts)i am sure she will do her very best to make sure he is not indicted. She will delay, delay, delay, disallow evidence and fuck with the Justice Dept. It is what she does for her man - she has already proven this. Best is this happens immediately, Smith files and 11th moves quickly. Even then, quickly in judicial time is not the same as in regular time. There was already a very small window and getting her was a major bonus for fascism worldwide. PUtin is so happy!
He will not be held accountable. Just like the impeachments

(26,081 posts)I don't think he will be aquitted, just think everything will take too long. Fani Willis is our only hope and it's a thin one because don't think this will take effect before the election which could allow him to steal the presidency and fuck democracy.

(1,067 posts)Impeachment requires the majority of the House to first charge him with a high crime and misdemeanor and then the Senate holds the trial and you must get 2/3 of the Senate to vote for conviction. That was never going to happen in the Senate.
With a Federal Indictment you must have a grand jury return charges and then the Indictment is read onto the record and the defendant is arraigned in front of a judge. For some reason you seem to think that Ailern Cannon is just going to stand up and say "Hey, these charges are a joke and you sir are free to go". It doesn't work that way and it won't happen.
On Tuesday afternoon at 3pm the defendant Donald J. Trump will appear before a magistrate judge in Miami where he will have the 37 counts read to him and he will be asked if he understands those charges. He will then be asked to enter a plea and either he or his attorneys will enter a plea of not guilty. After that it is game on.
I don't see where Trump gets away with anything . These charges are serious and there is substantial evidence, some of it being Trumps own words to back up those charges. If this goes to a jury then it will be up to the jury to determine his innocence or guilt.
jury in Florida will convict him? I wish I were sure of that

(1,067 posts)All I wanted was for Trump to be indicted for the crimes he has been charged with. Juries are funny as they tend to take their job seriously. Just because it is in Florida does not mean Trump will walk.

(296,102 posts)In his head, this is all a TV show. I have long described him as a cartoon character.
Consequences are finally coming for this lunatic buffoon.
The walls are closing in on Slobby. Hes too foolish to understand that his legal troubles are deeply serious. Since he cannot get good lawyers, mostly because hes a terrible client, the legal advice hes getting is either sophomoric or he ignores it. Both the client and his lawyers are out of their league.
Trump is finally getting cornered. All of the hand-wringing is tiresome. After all, he hasnt even been arraigned yet! Jack Smith, unlike Fitzgerald or Mueller, has got this. I dont think hes going to let Trump get away.
Enjoy your Sunday, malaise.

(8,218 posts)The logistics would be too hard. Or if he did, it would be someplace where he was the only inmate, surrounded by his SS detail who have to protect him wherever he is. I think it might be house arrest where he can only have a certain number of visitors and of course can't leave the house, and no access to the internet. It's not the same as what I would get for document mishandling, but I'm not under SS protection either.

(870 posts)there are no mandatory minimum penalties. If it were me up against those kinds of charges, I too would look at the minimums, not the maximum sentences. General BetrayUs got zero jail time.
So, I'm sure he's rationalized that he'll get the minimum sentence on all charges and be slapped with a monetary fine that the RNC will pay if he drops out of the race. That scenario is highly likely despite what we all would prefer to see.
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)moreland01
(870 posts)That's what "no mandatory minimums" means. No mandatory minimum jail time. The max jail time is 20 years for each count. So, he could get from zero jail time to 20 years jail time for each count. Not sure about whether those 20-year counts can be served simultaneously, or if they're required to be consecutive.

(7,401 posts)He has a long history of suing anyone who publicly says anything bad about him. He hires a contractor. Gets the work done. Refuses to pay picking out some small technicality. They sue him for payment. He sues them for defamation. Depending on how bad Trump wants vengeance for going up against him, the contractors either drop their suit for payment or they end up paying him to go away.
Trump thinks he owns the government. He considers the DOJ is an uppity contractor hassling him for no reason - because of dear leader does it then it's legal. I have no doubt he expects to sue the US government and get a big paycheck out of it.
