Palmer: Confused Donald Trump says he might cut plea deal in DOJ case if they pay him

https://www.palmerreport.com/analysis/confused-donald-trump-says-he-might-cut-plea-deal-in-doj-case-if-they-pay-him/50600/

Donald Trump made his first public appearance after being criminally indicted by the DOJ, and as one might have predicted, it went rather stupidly. Trump oddly made a point of insisting he’ll stay in the 2024 race even though he’s going on trial fairly soon for Espionage Act charges. This felt oddly defensive, given that no one anywhere was expecting him to just drop out immediately after being indicted. But then he said something truly strange.

Trump said he might be willing to cut a plea deal with the DOJ if “they pay me some damages.” No really, he said this. He really said this.

Maybe Trump was trying to be funny. But even if so, what he said still didn’t make sense. He seems to think this is some kind of civil case, where only monetary damages are on the line. He thinks this is negotiable. He doesn’t really appear to understand that he’ll be put on criminal trial, he’ll be found guilty, and he’ll go to federal prison, and the only “negotiation” he could potentially make is a slightly shorter prison sentence in exchange for pleading guilty.

Snip

But all of Trump’s obvious confusion and lack of a human sense of humor aside, he may have given something away here. He seems to be talking about some kind of scenario where he’s paid to go away, which makes you wonder if his endgame really is to get the RNC and its donors to pay him to exit the race rather than continuing to “run” once he’s in prison. We’ll see.

47. Impeachment vs Federal Indictment
Sun Jun 11, 2023, 11:23 AM
Jun 2023

Impeachment requires the majority of the House to first charge him with a high crime and misdemeanor and then the Senate holds the trial and you must get 2/3 of the Senate to vote for conviction. That was never going to happen in the Senate.
With a Federal Indictment you must have a grand jury return charges and then the Indictment is read onto the record and the defendant is arraigned in front of a judge. For some reason you seem to think that Ailern Cannon is just going to stand up and say "Hey, these charges are a joke and you sir are free to go". It doesn't work that way and it won't happen.

On Tuesday afternoon at 3pm the defendant Donald J. Trump will appear before a magistrate judge in Miami where he will have the 37 counts read to him and he will be asked if he understands those charges. He will then be asked to enter a plea and either he or his attorneys will enter a plea of not guilty. After that it is game on.

I don't see where Trump gets away with anything . These charges are serious and there is substantial evidence, some of it being Trumps own words to back up those charges. If this goes to a jury then it will be up to the jury to determine his innocence or guilt.

there are no mandatory minimum penalties. If it were me up against those kinds of charges, I too would look at the minimums, not the maximum sentences. General BetrayUs got zero jail time.

So, I'm sure he's rationalized that he'll get the minimum sentence on all charges and be slapped with a monetary fine that the RNC will pay if he drops out of the race. That scenario is highly likely despite what we all would prefer to see.

That's what "no mandatory minimums" means. No mandatory minimum jail time. The max jail time is 20 years for each count. So, he could get from zero jail time to 20 years jail time for each count. Not sure about whether those 20-year counts can be served simultaneously, or if they're required to be consecutive.

He has a long history of suing anyone who publicly says anything bad about him. He hires a contractor. Gets the work done. Refuses to pay picking out some small technicality. They sue him for payment. He sues them for defamation. Depending on how bad Trump wants vengeance for going up against him, the contractors either drop their suit for payment or they end up paying him to go away.

Trump thinks he owns the government. He considers the DOJ is an uppity contractor hassling him for no reason - because of dear leader does it then it's legal. I have no doubt he expects to sue the US government and get a big paycheck out of it.
