Business insider
Donald Trump didn't keep just any secret records. He stashed away what look to be some choice souvenirs classified maps of a foreign country, high-resolution imagery likely from US spy satellites, and even more highly sensitive ones about nuclear secrets, his indictment alleges.
There are 31 classified documents recovered by FBI agents that are at the epicenter of the case. The federal indictment alleges Trump "willfully" retained and then failed to return those documents back to the government after his presidency ended.
Trump, for his part, has claimed he was legally entitled to keep these records via the Presidential Records Act, which says an administration's documents belong to the government with exceptions for personal notes and journals
The fifth document listed by prosecutors, for example, is top secret, and bears two additional rules: it can not be shared with US allies (NORFORN) and is revealing enough of spying methods that the originating agency controls its further dissemination (ORCON). But right after the TOP SECRET classification level, two other access codes were redacted by prosecutors. All we are able to surmise comes from the description offered: "Document dated June 2020 concerning nuclear capabilities of a foreign country."
Federal prosecutors listed 31 highly sensitive documents they recovered via an FBI search of Mar-a-Lago in August, 2022.

(13,154 posts)It may be impossible to prove that Trump sold information, but his greed is such that I find it impossible to believe that he did not. I am really hoping that Jack Smith has intelligence gathered during the time Trump had the documents that shows that information in the hands of a foreign country that could only have acquired it from Trump.

Trump stole so much shit, it probably will be unknown what was taken.
He probably flushed the stuff he couldn't sell as he was going through them on the toilet. If he sold/gave away the originals, he could claim he never had them since they were not in his possession.

It's like asking if Gym Jordan or Marjorie Taylor Greene would go easy on Trump if they were the judge. Um, duh, of course they would.

(13,154 posts)And that will not happen because Republicans love judges who rule for them instead of the law. Does she really have anything to lose? She wont be impeached, but she can delay, delay, delay and cause all kinds of mischief. Even if her decisions are eventually overruled, she will have earned points with the Republican Party. I hope the DOJ can get her dismissed from the case for prejudice.

(262 posts)Trump stole docs from 7 agencies: the CIA being in charge of providing intelligence on foreign countries and global issues to the president, the Department of Defense, being responsible for providing the military forces needed to deter war and ensure national security, the National Security Agency which runs cybersecurity, the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency handles the analysis of imagery, imagery intelligence & geospatial information in support of the national security objectives, the National Reconnaissance Office, responsible for developing, acquiring, launching, and operating space-based surveillance, the Department of Energy, which maintains nuclear deterrent to protect national security, and the Department of State and its Bureau of Intelligence and Research.

(8,016 posts)"the Presidential Records Act, which says an administration's documents belong to the government"
The Act says the docs belong TO THE GOVERNMENT. The day he stopped being POTUS he was NO LONGER THE GOVERNMENT.
Very simple concept that anyone should be able to understand, & an argument that will NOT hold up in court.

(42,770 posts)Was there no awareness whatsoever by any Govt groups like DoD, NSA, CIA.. that trump was not to be trusted to handle these critically secret documents? Wonder if anyone tried to retrieve?. If a group kept logs they would have known trump still had X document?
Read that Obama WH was meticulous with this and had people snatching up documents at the end of meetings. Read John Kelly was a good doc gatekeeper too.

(82,849 posts)I would imagine that tracking down all these documents, what they affected, who they affected, and making sure that assets weren't compromised didn't come cheap. And assets that were compromised and had to be replaced wasn't free, either. Can the government agencies sue the former guy for the costs of cleaning up the mess he's made?

(10,751 posts)He's just so gawd damned slimey!
What really concerns me is this... how are we containing the threat that is DJT? He's running around free. Still freely functioning. He's going to continue to be a threat and stir up trouble for months/years. The damage he's caused and will continue to cause is seemingly endless. I do believe that eventually he will be stopped and will lose his freedom. But between now and then is plenty of time for more law-breaking, secret-selling, felony criminal behavior.
There are probably people behind the scenes paying close attention and monitoring the situation, right? But they're still very limited in what they can do, right?
It's all so Effd up.
