Sir Rod Stewart said in a recent interview that his wife, the model Penny Lancaster, banned him from being friends with Donald Trump because of his derogatory comments toward women. The pair are neighbors in the same area of Palm Beach, Florida, and Stewart has performed at several of the former president’s casinos in the past—but their friendly relationship came to a halt when he married Lancaster. “I used to go to his Christmas party and the balls he held but my wife said ‘no,’” Stewart told Scottish Field magazine. “There was stuff he was coming out with, what he was saying about women he had known in the past, and Penny said ‘you’re not going. He’s a disgrace.’”

The Daily Beast article puts it as "when they married", which was 2007. But the Daily Telegraph article, on which that's based, doesn't seem to say it was "when they married", just some time after. The one date it puts on things is:

Speaking in 2018 about his friendship with Mr Trump, Sir Rod said: “Let me just clear up the situation. I’ve known Trump for a long time. I’ve done concerts for him in his casinos. I live probably three-quarters of a mile down the road from him on the beach in Florida.

“He’s always been extremely nice to me. He’s let my friends use his golf course for nothing, and I’ve had no problems with him at all.

“Is he a great president? Nah. I think his moral compass is way off. But on the other hand the country’s doing extremely well, although I believe part of that was down to president Obama – the country was starting to do great anyway, he’s just carrying it on.

“But we’ll see with the mid-term elections. It does seem like the walls are closing in on my dear friend.”

In the original for that, he then said

whoops, he corrects himself – “I won’t say dear friend, he’s just a friend.”

and spoke approvingly of the white nationalist/neo Nazi National Front back in the day.

https://rogersmovienation.com/2020/10/16/documentary-review-remembering-when-british-music-turned-anti-racist-antifa-white-riot/

Remember that time Eric Clapton got up on stage and snapped “Get the wogs out, get the coons out” of his native Britain. That time David Bowie said “Britain is ready for a fascist leader?” “Good old days,” right?

Adam Ant using Nazi agitprop to launch his career. Clapton and Rod Stewart singing the praises of the white supremacist/Nazi “National Front,” a fringe political party that threatened to go mainstream before Thatcherism turned Britain hard right without the spoken-out-loud bigotry.

https://thequietus.com/articles/11246-physical-resistance-hundred-years-anti-fascism-extract

1976 was a busy year for anti-fascists. Rock Against Racism (RAR) was launched in the autumn. The story is a well-known one, but bears repeating. In August, Eric Clapton interrupted his set at the Birmingham Odeon to advise his fans to ‘Vote for Enoch Powell’ and ‘stop Britain becoming a black colony.’ In case his audience didn’t get the full implications of his message, Clapton expanded: ‘Get the foreigners out. Get the wogs out. Get the coons out’ and repeated the phrase ‘Keep Britain White’. His outburst prompted the photographer, Red Saunders, to write to the New Musical Express, Sounds, Melody Maker and the Socialist Worker to remind the guitarist ‘Half your music is black. You’re rock music’s biggest colonist.’ Saunders concluded his letter with the declaration: ‘We want to organise a rank and file movement against the racist poison music. We urge support for Rock Against Racism.’

Clapton was unrepentant. He told Melody Maker the following week that Powell ‘was the only bloke telling the truth, for the good of the country.’ Maybe he was hoping that being a rock star would immunise him from public opprobrium. After all, Rod Stewart had made similar remarks without provoking too much in the way of public disapproval and David Bowie, whilst in a drug-induced haze, had declared that that Britain was ready for a fascist leader and had ridden around Victoria Station in an open top Mercedes giving a Nazi salute. The Bowie incidents did create a brief furore in the press but the anti-racist and anti-fascist movement had failed to muster any meaningful response. Clapton’s outburst was the tipping point. The growing anti-racist sentiment of a younger generation challenged both the casual and the politicised racism of their elders. Hundreds of letters supporting Saunders flooded into the papers. Within months, Rock Against Racism (RAR) was born.

But I have noticed that once in a while a celebrity with the sort of fame that RS has develops (or is born with), shall we say, some character imbalances, often just perturbations in the profile we would want to have in a person to feel they'd make a proper friend. Like, say, decent judgment on the character of other people. [sarcasm]

It also seems safe to assume that a superstar would be just the sort of person to inspire abject fawning in tfg and possibly even drag him a few micrometers out of his psychopathy for a spell.

Give the gold medal to 'wake up maggots'.
.. er, appears autocorrected to 'magats'; well done autocorrect (joking).
.. begs the question whether 'magats' will become a new dictionary word this year (or is it already?)

Rod Stewart did say he liked to play at trumps golf course. Boo Rod, you do not need the reflected glory nor trumps infamy haunting you, shoulda realized that from the git go.
I looked it up few years back to see how many pro golfers played at Trump's courses, and was shocked it appeared most of the american notables, including tiger woods, mickleson, bryson cham----, even rory. Seemed like most american pro golfers got some reflected glorious perverted joy from chumming it up with trump and his money. At least a few years back, wonder how they think now that it's become more of a stigma to play there.

OK then, but somehow it tied in. Lemme explain, maybe you already know what I'm saying.
You wrote dictionarynword which on second read I thought you meant a new 'dictionary n word' (to add to the dictionary) which magat could become sort of for the maga rightwing nutjobs, though hardly as derogatory as the n word as America knows it.
Well I voted Obama twice, Kamela Harris once, black lives matter & trump is corrupt, and the first time I used the n word was when I was fifty and it was not in a malicious way, but speaking civilly about how slave owners would refer to their slaves. Heck, Dave Chappelle has used it far more than me!
Cheers again, M.

despite their awful record on women's rights and gay rights. She even left her pro gay songs off the playlist.

It's funny that this came up, because the New Yorker just had a long article about celebrities doing private gigs for huge money. Sometimes it's something like a Bar Mitzvah or corporate party. Other times it's for events in places like Dubai by people who should know better and also don't need the money.

The three holdouts for private gigs they mentioned were interesting. Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift, and AC/DC.

from perfect. Powell was vastly more intellectual, for instance.

They both died in 1998.

Rivers of Blood speech

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rivers_of_Blood_speech

The "Rivers of Blood" speech was made by British Member of Parliament (MP) Enoch Powell on 20 April 1968, to a meeting of the Conservative Political Centre in Birmingham, England. His speech strongly criticised mass immigration, especially Commonwealth immigration to the United Kingdom and the proposed Race Relations Bill. It became known as the "Rivers of Blood" speech, although Powell always referred to it as "the Birmingham speech". The former name alludes to a line from Virgil's Aeneid which Powell quoted:

As I look ahead, I am filled with foreboding; like the Roman, I seem to see 'the River Tiber foaming with much blood'.

The speech caused a political storm, making Powell one of the most talked about and divisive politicians in the country; it led to his controversial dismissal from the Shadow Cabinet by Conservative Party Leader Edward Heath. According to most accounts, the popularity of Powell's perspective on immigration may have been a decisive factor in the Conservatives' surprise victory in the 1970 general election, although he became one of the most persistent opponents of the subsequent Heath government.

Back then, he was just known for being a loudmouth, womanizing real estate guy who went nuts over the Central Park 5 case. Yes, he was repulsive back then, but nothing like he is known to be now. Now he is undeniably a full blown racist, traitorous fascist who has been adjudicated as having committed sexual assault. There is just no excuse for socializing with Trump now. None.

I'm not sure when Rod was hanging around at Donnie's and the article doesn't specify what years this occurred. Rod and his current wife got married in 2007, not much of a timeline between 2005 to 2007.

The thing is, the majority of us have been acquaintances with someone that was not exactly our friend.

He is very open and friendly with everyone. He needs to use a bit more caution.

I am thankful that he listens most of the time.

nor Eric Clapton have been worth listening to for years. They did good stuff early on, but Rod has been on the Casino circuit for years. Clapton is like a wet noodle.

I'm a big hip-hop fan. There's a good deal of non-misogynistic rap and hip-hop, with some very powerful women that has been coming out. Gangstah rap has such an Incel overtone with its constant strutting and threats that it's just a parody of itself. The late Coolio, OTOH, wrote "Gangster Paradise" which told the world what the life was really like. That was back in the 90s.

But sounds like Rod just knew Golfer Trump and didn't pay much attention to his politics (which were always flip-flopping) - good he listened to his wife.
