Trump started his defensive whining tonight talking about the "Clinton socks" case.

Which has been brought up before, as LetMyPeopleVote has posted in past months:

https://www.democraticunderground.com/100217238483

But it was still surprising to see it emphasized so much tonight.

He is going after others as well, but he seems to think this case alone justifies what he did.

From one of LMPV's posts, an excerpt from Rachel Maddow's blog:

https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/team-trump-takes-interest-clinton-sock-drawer-case-rcna47363

During his White House tenure, Bill Clinton spoke at some length with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Taylor Branch, and as part of the project, there were many recordings of their conversations. According to one 2007 account, tapes were at one point stored in a sock drawer.

A conservative group called Judicial Watch filed a lawsuit, demanding that Clinton be forced to turn over the recordings. In 2012, a federal court rejected the organization’s claims, concluding that the tapes were personal records, not official presidential materials.......

But it’s not nearly that simple. NBC News’ report added, “Unmentioned by Trump’s defenders who began raising the issue of the sock drawer case last month is that Jackson’s ruling explicitly states that the Presidential Records Act distinguishes presidential records from ‘personal records,’ defined as documents that are ‘purely private or nonpublic character.’”

In contrast, Trump took highly sensitive national security secrets to his glorified country club. To see the two as comparable is to overlook every relevant detail.

EDITING to mention my reply 4 below, since I found out only after I posted this OP that a Truth Social post from Trump referred to "THE CLINTON SOCKS CASE" this morning. If I'd seen that tweet from.a Daily Beast reporter, I wouldn't have been surprised by tonight's speech.

I honestly thought the "Clinton socks" case was something involving cat nip or kitty litter.

If I remember correctly is that republicans did investigate Socks the cat.

Kids would send him fan mail. Replies were sent signed by "Socks" So republicans had to find out who paid for the cat's replies.

This is why we can't have nice things.

And I was just doing some checking and ran across this tweet from a Daily Beast reporter showing a Truth Social post from Trump earlier today that I hadn't seen, or I wouldn't have been so surprised by his emphasis on this tonight:

There is no comparison. No whatabout. Trump, you committed felonies and there's evidence and witnesses to prove it. Make your time.
